Sweetest Day
If you are from the Midwest, more than likely you’re familiar with Sweetest Day. When I moved to Huntsville for college, I was surprised to learn that it wasn’t celebrated here in Alabama and that many people had never heard of it. I had no idea it was so specific to where I lived but, I did my best to introduce it to my husband (then boyfriend) in college in hopes of seeing it spread across the south. In keeping with that same spirit, I have decided I want my boys to celebrate this day. While it’s just a hallmark holiday, whose ever been hurt from getting a little more love?
Join me in showering your boys in some extra special Midwest love by taking them on a Sweetest Day date!
You may be asking yourself, what exactly is Sweetest Day anyway?
Sweetest Day is a day designed to celebrate and love on those sweet people in your life. It’s very similar to Valentine’s day but normally geared towards platonic relationships rather than romantic. However, over the course of it’s existence, the holidays focus has shifted. It is now a day of showering that special man in your life with all your love!
When is Sweetest Day celebrated?
Sweetest Day falls on the 3rd Saturday of October.
It will be celebrated on October 17th this year.
The Perfect Mother/Son Date
Start off with a hike around Green Mountain Nature Trail. It’s short and sweet and sure to get your heart pumping for a special day out with your favorite little guy(s)! As you walk around the trail, be sure to stop for a commemorative selfie under the famous covered bridge. That will come in handy when you document the day’s events.

Don’t forget to spend some time hanging out on the swings and playing in leaves and taking shadow pictures before heading to your next stop.
Next, head downtown and enjoy the annual pop up parks. Explore downtown in a new and exciting way as 7 parking spots are converted into mini-parks. To extend the fun downtown, go on the secret art stroll, and soak in all the great things happening in downtown Huntsville!

After exploring the parks and art downtown, you and your date should be ready to eat. Visit The Camp for a great selection of food ranging from BBQ to Sushi burritos and let your little love pick out his very own locally made “Capri sun” juice pouch. These are a hit with both kids and adults and will definitely add a little something special to the day.
While waiting on your food, challenge your date to a game of ping pong or corn hole. Prize: Winner gets to choose the dessert!
What’s a Sweetest Day date without sweets? It’s Not! End your day of love with a yummy milkshake from Maggie Moos at Bridgstreet Town Center.
There’s no better way to end a date!
PS) This date can also be adapted for the big guy in your life 🙂
