I’ve always been excited about the idea of camping. After experiencing my first campout in Michigan as a child, I longed for the chance to do it again. The stars, the smell of the pine needles beneath my feet, and sweet treats roasted over the fire are memories I hold onto and cherish to this day. But, as I’ve grown older and had opportunities to try on various styles of camping, I’ve found comfort over roughing it out to be where I’m happiest.
Glamping continues to increase in popularity because, like myself, many people have discovered that being one with nature and loving the outdoors doesn’t have to look a specific way. It’s all about how each individual finds connection and restoration in nature, and the Huntsville area just gained the perfect spot for those looking to do that in Selah Acres.
Selah’s Acres
As I turned into the property, the first thing I noticed were the words “luxury camping” under the campground name. Despite clear evidence of ongoing land revitalization and building, I felt the experiences here would appeal to seasoned and novice outdoor enthusiasts alike.
I continued on the gravel road, passing tiny homes in the works for future guests until I made my way to bell tents, where The Fellows Family welcomed me and gave me a tour and history lesson on the land.
Selah, a biblical word meaning to pause and reflect, is what you’ll be inspired to do as you explore the area. With just over 1 mile of rustic trails with terrain that includes creekside walking and crossing, wetlands, and natural forests, the call for stillness and peace is loud. As we made our way through the trail, I couldn’t help but pull up the seek app to identify some of the plant life and mushrooms we came across. With so much variety, one could spend hours playing pocket naturalists or simply observing the beauty without the need to know exactly what’s what. While I enjoyed navigating the forest, the creek was my favorite part of the trail. Stopping to take in the calm sounds of moving water, I quickly envisioned my three boys enjoying a splash and skipping rocks, knowing it would be nearly impossible to pull them away, and that’s how The Fellows want every visitor to feel.
We desire “to offer a safe place for families, individuals, and groups to disconnect, rest, and relax, or “Selah.” In our atmosphere, we hope to mend broken families, remind people of nature’s beauty, listen as needed, and to show God’s love” says Michael and Meeka Fellows.A portion of the tour takes visitors through an old pig pin that was once part of Alabama’s second-largest pig farm. The Fellows spend time walking guests through what the area was and share glimpses of what it will one day be. Holding on to the history of the land and weaving it into the present day deepens the connection and experience at Selah’s and can be found throughout your stay in the form of vintage bikes, old phones, and more.
After the tour, guests are encouraged to enjoy the glamground and its many amenities. The Fellows have thought of everything to ensure your stay leaves you feeling refreshed and renewed. From the RV that serves as a bathhouse and alternate hangout spot, an outdoor kitchen stocked with complimentary drinks, snacks, and a home-cooked breakfast in the morning, to the thoughtfully decorated and hand-painted tents packing light for this adventure should be a breeze.
When my tour ended, I didn’t want to leave. Had I not had to pick my son up from school, I would’ve stayed and hung out longer. It’s easy to feel that way when surrounded by passion and love for the community. The energy this family has poured into Selah’s Acres is tangible and will impact families and communities for years to come.
Selah’s Acres is open for business and but the Fellows want you to know “We are still building. We are restoring a historic home, building tiny houses, and clearing is underway for RV pads. This means key areas are under construction, improving our site with you in mind.”
“We are Mike and Meeka, campers, glampers, RVers, and all-around backyard enthusiasts! Along with our four kids (three sons and one daughter), Uno, Deuce, Lovely, and Cuatro, we enjoy gardening, building, weather watching, traveling, and learning new things. Our family is a package deal, a family that plays together, prays together, and loves hard! We love people and have never left a campsite without a few new friends. This love of nature and people gave birth to our family vision and business.”
