So this is the first of what I hope to be several movie reviews I’ll be writing for Our Valley Events. Before my first one I’ll give you a little back ground on me though so you can have some insight into the man spitting his thoughts at you. My name is Jeremy Pope. I’m a born and raised “Huntsvillian” and father to an amazing 10 year old, who goes to Blossomwood.
While I am active in several different activities/sports in Huntsville, going to the movies has always been a source of enjoyment and relaxation. A group of my friends and I have been going to the movies just about every Sunday night for the past 3-4 years, and we rotate who gets to pick the movie. Between this and going with my son who also loves to go to the movies, I cover the gambit of films that we get here in Huntsville.
Movie Selection
One down side to me reviewing movies…some of you will want to read about scary movies, and I cannot begin to tell you how much I hate scary movies. This is of course a problem in my little movie group also because the rest of the guys are “real men.” They seem to take no shortage of pleasure in watching me watch the movie with my shirt pulled up over my nose and plugging my ears the whole time.
Also, I am a self-admitted fan of “chick flicks” and defend my decision that The Notebook and Love Actually are both fantastic movies.
My Credentials
Another downside to me writing these reviews…I can’t write! If spell or grammar check doesn’t catch it and tell me that something is wrong, then it will probably be wrong. My sentences seem to run on, and my head is all over the place. Just stay with me; I’ll get there.
Inserted note from the OVE folks: we do actually read the blogs before they’re published, so we can help Jeremy out with this one.
I have not figured out yet how I will rate movies for you (3 thumbs up, 5 bags of popcorn, amount of times that I screamed, etc. etc. etc.), so please feel free to suggest how I should go about it.
Off to the Movies: Zero Dark Thirty
So here we go! Last night we went to Carmike and watched Zero Dark Thirty. I knew very little about this movie other than it was supposed to be based on the actual events that led up to finding Bin Laden. The movie focuses on the story of one CIA operative and the way that she crunched data, followed leads and engaged in some controversial, yet perhaps necessary, tactics to finally track this pr!*k down.
Fair warning: You get to see some graphic things in this movie that make it obvious why there were some people who were not particularly thrilled with the movie being made. Apparently sometimes you can’t just ASK NICELY for the bad guys to give you information.
SPOILER ALERT…Osama does not make it.
Final Thoughts
The movie is looooooooong, but other than having to readjust several times to keep my butt from going to sleep, I left the movie happy to have spent my $9 and would absolutely recommend that you see Zero Dark Thirty.
So there we go; the first of many reviews hopefully. My goal is to give you a regular guy’s opinion on whether you should throw down your hard earned bucks and your two free hours on seeing a particular film. I’ll keep the detailed information to a minimum, as I don’t want to ruin your movie going experience. Feel free to leave comments or you can email me directly with suggestions.
Thanks for reading!
