This weekend the classic characters from The Wizard of Oz come to life on stage at Huntsville High School. And we went straight to the source to get the inside scoop on the show, Dorothy Gale herself.
“Someplace where there isn’t any trouble …do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. It’s not a place you can get to by a boat or train. It’s far, far away… behind the moon… beyond the rain.” -Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz
Bored
My life, so I thought, was quite boring. It seemed no one listened to me. I thought no one understood me…except for my dog Toto. My whole life seemed gray and washed out, like the color of life had been drained from my world. Aunt Em and Uncle Henry loved me I am sure, but to me it seemed I was always “in the way.”
Even our farm hands, and my friends, Hunk, Hickory, and Zeke seemed to ignore me in my hour of need. I mean the nasty ole Ms. Gulch took Toto and was going to destroy him…what could I do?
Carried Away
So I ran away and met Professor Marvel…I wanted to go with him to see the world, but he said Aunt Em was sick. I knew I must get home to her. And I tried, I tried so hard, but the twister carried me away. I landed in a wonderful place, full of color and strange things, I knew I was not in Kansas anymore.
I made great friends while I was there, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Lion…but I also made an enemy of the Wicked Witch of the West.
No Place Like Home
I wanted to get home so bad. My friends braved the mean things the Wicked Witch tried to do to us and help me safely find the Wonder Wizard of Oz. He was a strange man. But after we completed the task of defeating the Wicked Witch, he granted some of our wishes:
- Scarecrow got his brain
- Tinman got his heart
- The Lion got his courage
Unfortunately the Wizard could not get me back to Kansas. Just when I thought all was lost, Glenda, the Good Witch of the North, showed me the way home.
I discovered after my adventures in Oz, that there is truly “no place like home”.
