Unlike southern children—who, according to the old adage, should be seen and not heard—southern storytellers are often better heard.
Sure, the best ones, like Rick Bragg and Fannie Flagg, have figured out how to put their unique voices into writing that readers can enjoy. But southern storytelling is still very much an oral art.
Thursday, September 25, 2014, at the Huntsville Library Foundation’s annual Vive le Livre fundraiser, the art of southern storytelling will take center-stage when we welcome novelist Joshilyn Jackson to Huntsville.
A Southern Storyteller
Hailing from Decatur, Georgia, Joshilyn Jackson is the New York Times bestselling author of five novels, including Gods in Alabama, A Grown-up Kind of Pretty, and Someone Else’s Love Story.
She’s a southern storyteller at heart, with a humorous, entertaining style that manages to deliver some serious messages about relationships, family, and the South as we know it.
The event, which will be held at Randolph School, begins with a VIP reception at 6 p.m. featuring southern fare, craft beer, and wine. (If you’re hoping for fried green tomatoes, grits, and freshly boiled peanuts, you won’t be disappointed.)
Jackson’s keynote address will take place at 7 p.m. in the Thurber Auditorium, and afterward guests are invited to join the author under the stars for a book signing and a sampling of southern sweets, from pecan pie to banana pudding.
Long Live the Book
Vive le Livre is the Huntsville Library Foundation’s annual event that supports the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library. This past year, contributions from the foundation funded the library system’s Digital Media Zone and provided more than $21,000 in grants at individual library branches throughout Huntsville and Madison County.
Now in its 28th year, Vive le Livre has long drawn a big audience to hear speakers such as Garrison Keillor, Ann Patchett, and Rick Bragg.
Get your tickets now to meet author Joshilyn Jackson and enjoy an evening of southern storytelling. For tickets and info, visit the Huntsville Library Foundation online, follow the foundation on Facebook, or call 256-532-5954.
Some tickets will be available at the door the night of the event.
