Trifecta: a parimuteul bet in which the better must predict which horses will finish first, second, and third in exact order.
Thanks Wikipedia.
An alternate definition, according to the FKA dictionary: a triumphant harmony of three autonomous but related conditions which conspire to render a spectacularly rare manifestation.
The latter is brewing in Huntsville this week.
First, The Ides of March approach. They culminate on the 17th with the annual holiday celebration inspired by The Knights of St. Patrick. Solofecta.
Second, I can’t remember what the groundhog said this year, which is about right given that I typically refrain from solicitating advice from small woodland animals. I do know what my eyeballs are telling me. Look around…It’s an early spring with warm sunny days and mild pleasant evenings. Bifecta.
And finally, in 2012 the Gregorian Calendar has decreed that the 17th day of March shall fall on a Saturday! You can tell me your thoughts, but I already know my favorite day of the week to chase a Jamison with a Guinness.
St. Patty’s Day Trifecta, Playas.
You don’t have to be Irish to love St. Patrick’s Day and especially on a Saturday. This coming weekend, Huntsville is rewarding your love this year with a row and a ruction of local revelries.
- Start the day with—well, start the day with an early liquid brunch–but quickly transition downtown for the 35th Annual Ellen McAnelly Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Parade Beginning at 11:30, The parade route runs up Jefferson Street from approximately the Veteran’s Memorial, wraps around the square and makes the return trip down Washington Street.
I’ll be relaxing on Breck Robinson’s patio at Amendment XXI. Come hang out with me and a hundred friends.
- From 1:00-3:30pm, your kids might enjoy the Shamrock Skate at the Wilcoxon Municipal Ice Complex. Wear green and donate canned goods for discounted admission and skate rental.
- From 3ish to 8ish, varying by location, Humphrey’s, Amendment XXI, Jefferson St Pub, Lone Goose Saloon and other downtown watering holes will host Happy Hour specials.
- Huntsville Young Professionals hosts their Annual St. Patrick’s Day Beer Tasting from 4:00-8:00pm at Crossroads. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.
Before you leave the house, check your pockets for your Maximum Fun Potential and your thirst for Green Beer.
- Sammy T’s Music Hall has drink specials all night plus DJ Keibot. Doors open at 8:00pm.
- If Live Music is your way to celebrate St. Patty’s Day, check out Whiskey River Kings at Finnegan’s Pub, Black Eyed Susan at Humphrey’s, Fistful of Beard at VooDoo Lounge, and Kush late night at Crossroads.
By the way Fistful of Beard, you did a good job naming your band! I’d like meet you and give you a Fistful of Handpound.
- Also at 7:30pm, The Flying Monkey @ Lowe Mill is hosting an “All Star” lineup of the best Irish musicians from across the Tennessee Valley, including members from Slip Jig and Kinvara among others. $8 cover.
So come ye wild rovers. If ye can’t find a place to shake yer trotters on St. Patty’s Day in Huntsville Alabama, then T’undering Jaysus, I don’t know what to do with ye.
May the love and protection
Saint Patrick can give
Be yours in abundance
As long as you live.

Thanks for the list! If you would like to get started early, there is a great Irish Happy Hour at Amendment XXI from 4pm-8pm on Thursday. For details see http://www.huntsvillestpatricksday.com/events.php – there is also an Irish themed comedy show going on this weekend too and the release of Straight to Ale’s Rocket City Red Irish style beer going on Saturday.
Love this! Just the right combination of information and wit! Good job!
You are a talented man my friend. Thanks for another great read.
Love the Top 10 list! Nice work Kinzer. See you downtown on St. Paddy’s.
What I’m sure was an accidental omission: Bourbon and Shamrocks playing at the Sports Page beginning at 9:00. 5 O’Clock Charlie from 4-8.
Hi Catharine,
I think Michael’s list wasn’t supposed to be a complete list of everything going on in town for the holiday. Only a run-down of some of the great events offered. The two you mentioned do sound great, though! We had Bourbon and Shamrocks on our Event Calendar already, but had missed 5 O’Clock Charlie. Thanks for pointing it out- I just added it!

I can’t wait for the HYP party! I mean, your ticket includes 2 drink tickets. Beer and well is one ticket, Irish car bombs are 2 tickets. Then there’s happy hour pricing the whole time. And to top it off, local beer tasting is included in your ticket! So excited!
Great job Mike, it’s always nice to hear from someone who cares about our wonderful city..
Joe Mosley…oh snap. Good to hear from you brother.
Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday.
Breck is opening Ammendment early for us, so come for the Parade @ 11:30 on the Patio @ AXXI.
