Catch ’em all, Huntsville!
In the last few days, Pokemon Go seems to be everywhere. And we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t treat this like the major event that it is!

For the readers out there that don’t know what Pokemon Go is (but you’ve no doubt witnessed people playing it…yes you have!), here’s a brief explanation:
Pokemon Go is a free app that turns your real world into a game map through your phone’s GPS. This new Pokemon world is a blue map filled with different pillars and markers that largely sync up with the real world roads and buildings.
Pokemon Go Huntsville Tips (from a Pro)
We are calling our friend Owen a pro because we can! Since we aren’t trainers yet (give it time!), we asked him to give us some info and tips! He’s been spending a lot of time Downtown (with several hundred of his fellow trainers).
1. Big Spring Park and the surrounding areas are full of Poke Stops. They appear on your game map as small blue pillars with spinning cubes floating above them.
Stops are often tagged to real world points of interest such as historical markers or other places with noteworthy features. You can find them all around Downtown and especially the park. Once you find a Poke Stop you can collect items to use during your Pokemon Go game from that Poke Stop so find as many as you can.
2. The other big thing to find are “Gyms”. These are areas where you can battle other Pokemon Go teams. At the Gyms, if you find someone on another team you can engage them in a Pokemon Go battle.
3. If you’re in Big Spring Park and you see people walking around looking at the screen of their Pokemon Go, they are probably trying to find Poke Stops in order to collect new beneficial items.
If they are standing stationary around Big Spring Park with others, they have probably found a Gym and are having a Pokemon battle.
APP TIP: Don’t forget: playing Pokemon Go uses data from your data play so make sure you keep track of that. Also, make sure your phone battery is charged because the game uses a lot of battery.
BONUS: We also found this Rarity Chart, made by Reddit user RotomGuy. You can find it here.
Downtown Huntsville Street Food Gathering Gym Battle
Downtown Huntsville is going to host the largest set of Pokemon Go Gym Battles in Big Spring Park this Friday, July 15, during the Street Food Gathering. It will be the largest set of Gym Battles in the history of Alabama! They will also be dropping 25 lure modules between 5 – 9 pm, during the Street Food Gathering hours.
As Concerts in the Park proved, Pokemon Go, food trucks and music are a match made in heaven!

There are several helpful resources specific to Huntsville. We found the link to this collaborative map on Reddit. It’s being updated constantly.
