We often find ourselves thinking about what Huntsville needs in terms of dining options and the types of restaurants we would love to come to the city.
Mexican restaurants are not usually involved in these conversations since there is already a solid lineup of great spots to get amazing Mexican food in town.
Obviously, we are not opposed to having even more choices as Huntsville grows, but it’s pretty easy to feel content with these favorites!
Taco Bus
El Cazador, or known to most people as Taco Bus, is THE place to go for authentic and affordable tacos.
$5 gets you four tacos with your choice of meat and the usual authentic toppings of cilantro and onions.
Be sure to top them off with the pickled carrots and red and green sauces that are included. Perfection!
Local Taco
One of the newest restaurants on our list, Local Taco brings farm to table goodness to The Shops at Merchants Walk.
Unique to them is the Nashville hot chicken taco topped with slaw, Wickles Pickles, and creamy poblano sauce.
Also a must try are the Mexi-tater tots, which are like cheesy hush puppies.
Little Rosie’s
You cannot make a list about Mexican food and not include the fan favorite Little Rosie’s!
We love their soft beef tacos with rice and beans and of course unlimited chips and salsa.
Add a margarita (on the rocks, please!) and you have the perfect Mexican feast!
Taco Mama
The best thing about Taco Mama is all toppings are FREE! Whether you build your own or choose something from their menu, you cannot go wrong.
We always opt to build our own tacos and burritos and usually fill them with as many veggies as we can. Don’t miss out on the Mexican mac and cheese either; it’s heavenly.
El Azteca
We just discovered El Azteca a couple months ago and have been numerous times since then.
Their fajitas are amazing and can easily be shared between two people (although we have each ordered our own at times, too). Also, the fajita quesadilla is worth checking out as well.
Bandito Burrito
Bandito Burrito is easily our favorite quirky spot to grab a green bean burrito, hang out on the patio, and pet the local cats.
We love this place because it’s all about simplicity and neighborhood vibes.
Seeing a vegetarian section on their menu is especially welcome, and the no carne burrito never disappoints.
Add a brownie or banana pudding to your meal for $1 as an extra treat.
Do you love these places as well, or do you have another favorite spot?

For authentic tacos, skip the chains. Might as well go to Taco Bell. Try Charritos or Casa Blanca ‘street tacos’-only meat, cilantro and onions, the way tacos are meant to be. (Hint: they don’t have Nashville hot chicken in Mexico)
The Buena Vista restaurants and Las Trojas are also authentic. Try ANY of the local, family-owned Mexican restaurants before the chains of Americanized “tacos”. You’ll thank me later!
Did you read the article? Nothing more authentic than El Cazador and El Azteca! This was not “6 Authentic Mexican Restaurants in Huntsville”. 🙂
Great article! Delicious choices! Easily the best taco list in town.
Thank you, Jay! We appreciate it!
Should check out Taqueria El Palomino #2 on Jordan Lane. They have a bigger seating area now and same great food!
Great suggestion!
La Placita in Madison on Hughes road is awesome if you want to venture out from Huntsville.
