Monte Sano State Park Made Simple

Even though there is still a winter chill in the air (and a few snowflakes), spring is just around the corner for Huntsville.

Pretty soon everyone in town will start having the same idea: packing a picnic basket and driving up to Monte Sano State Park.

Nestled at the edge of Downtown Huntsville, Monte Sano is one of the many beautiful state parks found in North Alabama, and a great place to see spring in bloom.

Named by the Spanish after its discovery, Monte Sano means “Mountain of Health”, and was a popular destination for people across the country in the late 1800’s. Today the park boasts a playground, ball field, disc golf course, campgrounds, and a variety of hiking trails.

Nature lovers can rent a rustic mountain-side cabin on park grounds, and explorers will love stumbling across the Japanese Garden. (Editor’s Note: See the Tea Garden, and other weird landmarks, here.)

Monte Sano State Park is open seven days a week from 8am to sundown, and admission rates vary from $1-3. Annual passes are also available.
