Madison Ghost walk

September 13, 2013 – Friday the 13th – seemed like the perfect evening for a ghost walking tour in Madison, Alabama.

Jacquelyn Proctor Reeves, author and local historian, led us on our ghost walking tour through Madison. Oral story telling is way to preserve history and it is a drying art. Jacquelyn wants to keep the art of story telling alive with the ghost walking tours in Huntsville and now Madison.

She is also the owner of Avalon Tours and long-time participant in the Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll. You may also recognize her from the Huntsville Ghost Walk.

A Spooky and Historic Tour

The Madison Ghost Tour started promptly at 6:00PM where we met and gathered in front of the Bandito Burrito in downtown Madison. The weather was cooperating nicely with cooler temperatures and made for great photo taking. I was hoping to catch a ghost on my iPhone or at least an orb.

Our tour taught us that there were a lot of happenings and hauntings in Madison. After all, we were in the oldest part of Madison where there are stories of civil war, slave uprisings, Presidents, and murder mysteries.

We heard about actual hauntings that have taken place in some of the Madison homes, and perhaps sometimes still do. The railroad tracks also seem to have a lot of activity and visitations. One story included President McKinley. Another story tells of an old ghost who, every time the train passes by, he goes running up to it as fast as he can and screams at the top of his lungs. Once the train passes by, he simply dissolves into the night air. As our tour guide was telling us about this regular haunting, wouldn’t you know it, a train came by giving us all a thrill.

Family Fun

This is a great event for the whole family. We had children on our tour and they did just fine. In fact, Jacquelyn tells us that children are more apt to see ghosts than adults because they haven’t yet developed skepticism. Women are more open to seeing a spirit than men.
