Washing a car, folding clothes, or making a sandwich … these are things we all do on a regular basis. They are simple tasks, but imagine hundreds or thousands of people volunteering to do simple tasks like these to love thy neighbor, and what an impact that could have.
Service in Action
That idea is exactly what “Serving the City as One” is all about: many churches and volunteers doing simple yet helpful tasks like these, all in one day, in one accord, in combined force, across the city. On Saturday, April 21, 2012, four main churches, or Hubs, across the city will coordinate volunteers, supplies, and efforts to serve the city of Huntsville.
The four hub sites for Madison County are:
- Central- First Baptist Church Huntsville. Click here for directions
- North- Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Click here for directions
- South- Willowbrook Baptist Church. Click here for directions
- Madison- CrossPointe Church. Click here for directions
Projects for All
Churches, groups, and individuals across the city have been signing up during the month of March to serve a Hub and its list of projects. Many of the projects are “no skills required” and can be done in just a few hours.
Example projects include:
- Washing cars for free
- Making sandwiches at a block party in Madison
- Planting flowers
- Painting a room at a local school
- Folding and sorting clothes at the Salvation Army
These are a few examples of the many tasks that are easy to do but are very much needed. There are many projects to choose from and all are worthy of your time. Click here to see more projects and to sign up.
The impact of everyone serving all in one day is such a blessing to our community … last year over 3000 individuals and 65 churches served in over 225 different projects across the city and impacted over 10,000 individuals. Imagine what we can do this year!

Volunteer
Even though thousands have committed to serve already, more volunteers are needed. You do not have to be a member of a church or group to serve; individuals are welcome and can still sign up online. Not sure about what you see online or have specific questions about how or where you can serve? Mike Pearce, Minister of Missions and Outreach at First Baptist Huntsville and director of Serving the City as One, welcomes you to contact him directly at 256-655-3423.
In one of the videos on Serving the City Online a lady says about her service: “I’m doing something for somebody that my Jesus loves.” I really can’t think of a better reason to serve than that. Can you?
