While Huntsville’s food scene is beginning to grow with new concepts being announced regularly, we like to emphasize classic Huntsville restaurants that have been staples in the community and stood the test of time.
We couldn’t imagine this city without these 5 well-known spots:
Long Time Huntsville Restaurants
Mary’s Pit BBQ – Est. 1958
Located in Gurley with a building that is full of history and has all the character you would expect of a country 1950’s BBQ restaurant, Mary’s delivers an experience worthy of being considered a destination even if you’re not lucky enough to live close by. Be sure to try their country style ribs!
Stanlieo’s – Est. 1971
Stanlieo’s is home of the super sub and an important part of Huntsville food history. We love that the decor has been kept old school to give you a feeling of nostalgia when visiting. And the best part is how they aim to please everyone whether you are a carnivore craving the Kitchen Sink sandwich or a vegetarian looking for veggie versions of classic steak or corned beef sandwiches.
Ol’ Heidelberg – Est. 1972
German food in Alabama? Yes! Ol’ Heidelberg has been providing Huntsville with authentic German cuisine for nearly 50 years. Gypsy schnitzel, German potato salad, and sausage platters keep people coming back for more. Be sure to save room for dessert. They have a huge selection of cakes and pies, and you do NOT want to miss them!
Gibson’s BBQ – Est. 1956
Gibson’s is the original Huntsville spot to have a traditional southern breakfast with biscuits and gravy, BBQ chicken with hush puppies for lunch, or a slice of their killer apple pie. You’re guaranteed to feel the history of the restaurant when dining here since they have maintained the classic feel people have been experiencing for decades.
Big Spring Cafe – Est. 1922
Big Spring Cafe is THE oldest restaurant in Huntsville! They call themselves “home of the greasy burger” and you can still find them serving up classic diner staples like hamburgers, hot dogs, and no bean chili in their location on Governors Drive. You can also stop in for breakfast and enjoy omelets, biscuits, and breakfast plates.
