As we’re sure many of you are, all of us with Geek Out Huntsville are beyond excited for the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in just a few weeks.

As we’re waiting to find out what great songs are on the next Awesome Mix, we wanted to shake things up a bit.
If we were nominating famous Huntsville personalities as our own Guardians of the Galaxy, who might they be?
We took a look into it and made our recommendations!
Star Lord
First of all, let’s face it. We’re going to have a hard time finding someone with the same goofy charm of Chris Pratt. But let’s take a look at what else makes for a good Star Lord. He came of age in the 70’s, loves music from that era, and acts as a great leader for his team.
With that in mind, we nominate Channel 19’s Jerry Hayes. He’s the leader of the team at WHNT, has been a mainstay of the Huntsville area since 1979, and loves some great music from that era.
Granted, his Awesome Mix might have a lot more Randy Owens than Bowie, but this is Huntsville after all.
Gamora
Huntsville has no shortage of women that could be considered the most dangerous in the galaxy. But if we’re looking for a famous Huntsville native that has taken on baddies from Dr. Horrible to the monsters in Buffy, we’ve no further to look than Felicia Day.
Felicia was born in Huntsville and has gone on to star in tons of great TV shows and web series since that time. She’s also no stranger to space, as she’ll soon be starring as one of the villains in the upcoming Mystery Science Theater 3000 reboot.
Drax
When it comes to the big green guy known as The Destroyer, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn brilliantly cast the charismatic wrestler Dave Bautista. Huntsville also has a share of huge guys who made a name for themselves in sports, as many baseball players who would become famous started their careers with the Huntsville Stars.
For Huntsville’s own Drax, we nominate the famous giant slugger Mark McGuire. McGuire played for the Stars for a brief stint before being promoted to the Oakland A’s, and at that time certainly had the frame of a giant powerful alien that fits the bill.
Groot
So let’s get it out of the way first, we’ll find some random big tree in Monte Sano to serve as Groot. What we really need is a great booming voice to shout the few words that Groot does say.
Marvel went with a big beloved bald guy in the form of Vin Diesel, so we’ll follow suit by nominating the voice of the Huntsville Havoc, Freak Daddy. He’s already shown he’s got a powerful voice when he welcomes everyone in for hockey night in Huntsville, we’re thinking he’d be a great fit for Groot.
Rocket
It’s probably not very fair for us to cast an actual Huntsvillian as a borderline insane raccoon, so we’re going to go with a famous Huntsville resident that’s approximately the same in terms of size and bravery.
Miss Baker was one of the first animals launched into space and recovered safely. After her successful flight in 1959, she eventually made her home at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. She was buried there after she passed away, where fresh bananas can frequently be seen on her tombstone.
However, just like Groot, we need a good voice for Rocket. He may only be right beneath Bradley Cooper in terms of rugged good looks, but we do need someone who can match wits with our own Star Lord, so we nominate WHNT’s Greg Screws.
He’d be a different kind of Rocket with his brand of folksy charm, but we know he’s someone who can hold his own with our own Star Lord.
Do you have any other nominations for who could help fill our own roster of Huntsville’s Guardians of the Galaxy?
