Do you ever get the urge to create something beautiful and amazing but just don’t know where to begin? I know I do. And usually when I attempt this monumental task on my own it usually looks more like an art project I brought home in elementary school than the great work of art I was hoping for.
If too are looking for a creative outlet, you are in luck: The Huntsville Museum of Art has a slew of classes to satisfy anyone’s creative urges! Because they have SOOO many offerings, I’ve broken down their classes into a handy guide!
Here is your guide to Huntsville art classes by age and skill level.
Huntsville Art Classes: Preschoolers
These classes are designed for children ages 3-5 years old.
Artsy Animals
Dates: July 29, 31, August 2
Back by popular demand! Create fun paintings, sculptures and collages of your favorite animals and critters. Media include air-dry clay, pastel, and watercolor. [spacer size=”0″]
The ABC’s of Art: Young-at-art
Dates: August 5, 7, 9
Learn about basic elements of art such as color, line, shape, and texture in this drawing and painting class. Media include crayon, watercolor and oil pastel.
Huntsville Art Classes: Grades K-8
These classes are for childern in elementary and middle school. Each class will indicate if designed with a more specific age group in mind.
Create with Color
Dates: July 23, 25, 30, August 1
Age: For ages 5-8 years old.
Learn about color mixing and brushwork as you discover the fantastic world of painting. Media include watercolor, tempera paint, and watercolor pencil.
Spectacular Sketches
Dates: July 29, 31, August 2
Age: For grades K-5
Back by popular demand! Spend the morning drawing at the Museum. Explore how artists use the basic elements of art – color, line, shape, and texture to create their own artwork. Media include colored pencil and pastel. All New Projects!
Express Yourself!
Dates: August 5, 7, 9:
Age: For 5 years old & up
Get inspired in the Museum and let loose your creativity. Create sculptures and paintings to develop fun, colorful and experimental projects. Discover the elements of art – color, line, shape, and texture.
Awesome Animals!
Dates: August 6 & 8
Learn about how artists show animals in their artwork. Then, capture the creatures in watercolor and pastel.
Saturday Classes for Children
- July 20th: Studio Art Adventures: Let’s Draw Create very own drawing masterpiece using marker and oil pastel.
- August 3rd: Studio Art Adventures: Let’s Print! Explore the printmaking techniques to create your very own block print and monoprint
Huntsville Art Classes: Adults
These classes are designed for high schoolers and adults.
From Pencil to Pastel: Drawing Techniques
- Dates: July 16, 23, 30, August 6, 13, 20
- Skill Level: All
Learn about drawing techniques – proportion, shading, and texture. Media include graphite, charcoal, and pastel. Some materials included.
Beginning Ceramics
- Dates: July 23, 30, August 13, 20, 27, September 10, 17
- Skill Level: All.
This class is great for people who would like to explore wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques in clay. Projects will involve coil building, slab construction, and wheel thrown pieces. Projects are outlined with creative thought involving found objects and imagination. Students will explore their creative side and challenge their skills in wheel throwing and handbuilding. Some materials included.
Mosaics
- Dates: August 3rd One – Day Class
- Skill Level: All
Create artful mosaics using pottery shards, ceramic tile, and glass. Grouting and finishing techniques will also be covered. Bring a small object to work on such as a terra cotta flower pot, wooden picture frame, wooden tray or small tabletop.
Intro to Oil Painting Techniques
- Dates: August 8, 15, 22, 29, September 12, 19
- Skill Level: All
Review the fundamentals of drawing—including line, value, proportion, perspective, and composition—and how they relate to painting. Learn the three stages of painting, with emphasis on color and paint application, to realize representational and abstract subjects.
Ceramics: Wheel Throwing
- Dates: August 8, 15, 22, 29, September 12, 19
- Skill Level: Prior clay class experience is helpful.
Surface Design & Beyond Explore the use of glazes and slips and sculpting techniques to create expressive and individual works such as mugs and vessel forms.
Wire & Bead Jewelry
- Dates: August 10: One – Day Class
- Skill Level: All
This class explores the art of wire shaping to create artful earrings, bracelets, and necklaces with various beads and stones. Materials included.
The Whole Family: Drop in and Create
- Date: August 17th from 11am – 1pm (no RSVP needed)
- Skill Level: All
Looking for something a little less structured? Then you’ll love the Museum’s Drop in and Create Days! They’re free art sessions, but with a specific mission. During the August session you’ll explore the art of Post-Impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh and produce a sunflower masterpiece of various colors of construction paper and glue. How cool is that?!

All classes are held at the Museum of Art in the Chrysler Corporation and Colonial Bank Classrooms.
