Weekend at Honeycomb Campground

A couple of weekends ago, my family did a first. Our first camping trip that is.

With a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old.

And I have lived to tell you about it.

Setting the Scene

I bought my husband a tent for Father’s Day last year. Even though there had been some use of it in the back yard, it had gone no further than that. Then I found out that a couple of friends had gone camping at Honeycomb Campground on Guntersville Lake during the summer and I immediately said “I want to go!”

From that, a family camping trip was born. Several other friends joined in and soon were all choosing our sites and making reservations at Honeycomb for the big weekend!

Camping/Glamping

My childhood camping experiences were from inside the luxury of a camper. You know the kind where you lowered the kitchen “table” down level with the seats to make a bed?

Since this time we would be camping in a tent, I had no idea what to expect. I was thrilled when we arrived at Honeycomb Campgrounds. It’s right on the water, far away but not too far and a great place for a family camping adventure.

There ended up being 6 total families – 12 adults, 6 kids, and 1 dog. For our group, we joined up on groceries and meals, watched the kids ride around on scooters and trikes, swam, fished, canoed, kayaked and had a big giant smore’s party. We even watched the Alabama vs. Texas A&M game on a laptop tethered to a homemade antenna! The game was made more interesting with a couple of spirited Aggies in our party.

For my family, we chose a site across the driveway from the water and right beside the restrooms (site 79). With a 2 year-old, I wanted that buffer between us and the lake. Directly across from us was a boat dock. At night it got plenty dark and quiet, even being near the restrooms.

Good to Know

• Each campsite contains a gravel parking area, fire pit (firewood sold on-site), picnic table, electrical and water hook-ups.
• You are allowed only one tent on your campsite. RV’s far outweigh the tents at Honeycomb, but there still were quite a lot of tents in addition to our big party.
• Each campsite is allowed 2 vehicles. We only had one car, but even more friends came on Saturday to spend the day with us and they were able to use the second car tag for our campsite.
• One family in our party had a canoe and kayak. If you have a canoe, there is a nice launch area around site 78.
• The campground rents RVs and Pontoon boats. Check the website for details and prices.
• Get up early, grab your camera and a cup of coffee and enjoy a stunning sunrise view of the lake

Things to Bring

Here are some items that I’m glad I brought:

• An extension cord, power strip and hose with you. You will want to be able to plug in your Keurig after all. (No glamping trip should be without one!)
• Fishing poles for the lake
• Smart members of our party decked the kids out in Dollar Store glow bracelets and glow necklaces. It was a great way to spot the kids at night (it can get pretty dark).
• Flashlights and first aid kit
• A tablet loaded with episodes of Go Diego
• Coffee and bacon
• A sense of adventure

And Do It Again

Even though there were times when keeping up with my 2 year-old was tough and my oldest son came home with a lot less skin on his knees, the overall experience of camping with my family and sharing a fun weekend with good friends was priceless! I highly recommend Honeycomb Campground for a weekend getaway with your family, or even just your significant other.

If I can survive a weekend in a tent, anyone can. In fact, we all had such a great time that we’ve made plans to do it again in the spring.
