I love to be out on the lake but in the summer, sometimes, you just need a break from the heat of the sun.
I was pleased to discover an evening kayak trip offers just that respite. And a unique experience.
Kayak to the Hambrick Bat Cave
Lake Guntersville is home to the Hambrick Bat Cave. The bat cave houses 60,000 + gray bats.
During the summer months, you can witness them emerge from the cave for their nightly feeding.
The cave is only accessible by boat. Here’s where the kayak comes in!
We took the guided kayak trip offered by Unphiltered Kayaking. It is a family-friendly, 2-mile round trip that anyone from age 6 and up can take.

The group left from the Guntersville Dam about 80 minutes before sundown and paddled out to the cave.
Seeing the lake in the evening is gorgeous. Peaceful, less traffic, and the sunset is beautiful.
As we paddled along the shore line we saw bald eagles and listened to the frogs and other night animals.
Once at the cave you can often see the horned owls waiting to try and catch their dinner as well.
When you reach the cave, Phil teaches about the significance and purpose of the unique cave, its inhabitants, and the local history of the area.
The emergence starts slow sometime around dusk and you can float right near the entry as the bats fly all around you.
