Do you remember the first time you heard of Grumpy Cat? I was oblivious to the online phenomenon until a couple of months ago, when the artists at Lowe Mill were invited/challenged to participate in a sure-to-go-viral art project: create a Grumpy Cat in our own art style. And The Grumpy Cat Art Project was born, masterminded by Dustin Timbrook, Lowe Mill Media Director.
Grumpy Cat Origins
In case you don’t know, Grumpy Cat is the nickname for Tardar Sauce, a real cat owned by real people. Thanks to the magic of the internet, this kitty has had so much publicity it’s hard to believe. I don’t know many companies who could afford the kind of free press this cat is getting!
Back in Huntsville, over 30 artists submitted artwork and The Grumpy Cat Art Project was born. And did it go viral like the original Grumpy Cat? Why yes, yes it did. Here’s a quick highlight of articles about the project:
Tardar herself even re-tweeted a link to the post. You follow Tardar on Twitter at @RealGrumpyCat.
(On a side note, do you remember the series, “Friends”? Remember Pheobe’s famous cat song, “Smelly Cat”? I think there should be a remix for Grumpy Cat …..if you want to hear Phoebe and friends sing the original, click here) If someone does this and it goes viral, remember, YOU READ IT HERE FIRST!
Own Grumpy Cat Art
And there is more! All the Lowe Mill Grumpy Cat artwork created by your local artists (world famous artwork now) is going up for auction on May 27th until 9pm on May 31st. Proceeds from the auction will go towards building a playground at Lowe Mill.
And just what kind of Grumpy Cat artwork have the 30+ artists at Lowe Mill created?

- A Grumpy Cat chainmail from Erin Michael
- A Grumpy Cat wool rug from Jeannie Vereen
- Grumpy Cat paintings from Jim Seaquist, Holly Morningstar, Nathan Childers and more
- And much more!

In fact, you absolutely do not want to miss being at Lowe Mill on May 31st. Besides the World Famous Grumpy Cat Art Project reception, there will be SEVEN other art receptions PLUS the last Spring Concerts on the Dock! And if the tune “Smelly Cat” is still stuck in your head, you’re welcome.
