Green Mountain Power Line Hike

Soon after turning onto Green Cove Road from the Parkway it comes into sight. It stands there beckoning, sometimes taunting you. “Come climb me”, it says, “You’re not doing anything productive today any way.”

It is a spectacular looking specimen, that bears an uncanny resemblance to my parted-down-the-middle mullet from 8^th grade. This is a power line cut that is part of the Green Mountain Log Trail.

The trailhead for the Green Mountain Log Trail actually begins up on Green Mountain on Riverview Drive. But who wants to take the easy route? To get the full experience, you need to start at the bottom and climb up.

Getting There

You can go to the Morningside Baptist Church (near where Bailey Cove becomes Green Cove) and ask if it is ok if you park in their parking lot while you go walk up a mountain.  They are always very polite and accommodating, even if they think you are strange.

You can also park at the dead end on Leafmore Circle if you don’t like people.

The actual hike is fun and challenging with a great view to reward you for all the hard work at the top.

I would recommend wearing pants or at the very least some long socks to protect your legs from all the nature and what not.

The outdoors are typically full of nature if you haven’t been there in awhile.

Be prepared for a pretty vigorous workout since you will experience about 1,300 feet or so in elevation change. It felt like doing a bunch of lunges, so I had to stop a few times to catch my breath.

There are some pretty tricky parts, so hiking boots with ankle support are a must. It is particularly a little hazardous on the way down. This guy I know may have fallen flat on his back on the descent. Twice.

I would recommend this hike for anyone with a pretty decent level of fitness, who is looking for a challenge, and is looking for an interesting hike with a spectacular view of south Huntsville.
