I’ve heard the same phrase in Huntsville about a million times.
“There’s nothing to do in Huntsville” people complain “except the typical (insert Huntsville thing here) scene”.
It seems that both natives and transplants of the Rocket City are searching for something fun and out of the norm to do. It might seem like there’s nothing around, but as any Huntsville-savvy person knows, there’s plenty to find if you just do a little digging.
It starts with moving your feet –
HUNTSVILLE SWING DANCE SOCIETY
Vintage Jazz and Swing are starting to make a comeback with the 20-somethings, but the members of Huntsville Swing Dance Society have been jiving since the 1990’s. Their mission is to provide the community with an avenue to share Lindy Hop, Balboa, and other styles of swing with like-minded locals.
The HSDS has hosted dances all over Huntsville in the last nineteen years, but now calls the Flying Monkey Theater home. Inside the theater is an ample dance floor and stage, used by the society to host monthly events with local and regional jazz bands.
These monthly dances have beginner lessons an hour before the band goes on, and have brought in crowds of 100+ dance enthusiasts.
For dancers looking to hone their skills, HSDS puts on small workshops throughout the year at affordable prices.
Looking to meet swing dancers from other areas? HSDS hosts a regional meetup every December for dancers all over the Southeast to dance and compete with one another.
Don’t miss their annual Sock Hop August 16, 2014 with musical guests Rocket City Jazz Orchestra at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment.
Salsa. Hip Hop. Line Dance. Ballet. These are only a few of the classes offered at local studio Dance Rocket City.
With six different instructors and celebrity guests, Dance Rocket City is the perfect place for beginning or seasoned dancers. The newest addition to this studio has been the budding social scene.
Dance Rocket City throws a weekly Friday Night Social and a themed party the last Saturday of every month. This day-long event offers a variety of dance classes in the afternoon and a free-dance party at night.
This month’s dance event is a Football Kickoff themed party, with classes ranging from Salsa to Line Dance.
Dance Rocket City loves sharing dance with the community, and offers discounts to their classes and events to newcomers. Current students and active military also get discounts with ID.
THURSDAY NIGHT SWING
For the more avid swing dancers in Huntsville, Thursday Night Swing offers weekly beginner and intermediate lessons followed by a dance at Flying Monkey Theater.
