Love movies, but hate the cost? After you pay for movie tickets and snacks you could be out close to $50- just for two people on a weekend. And if you have kids, the price just skyrockets… Which is why you’ll be delighted to hear that the U.S. Space and Rocket Center is starting a free summer film series! (Yes, I did just use the words free and film in the same sentence; I’m sure that does sound a bit odd.)
The Details: Free Summer Film Series
This is not a joke, and there really is no catch. There are two different series: one featuring family films and one featuring sci-fi and space themed films. So something for just about everyone! Because I don’t know about you, but I love cartoons!
All the films are completely free and no reservations are required. Seating is first come first serve, so you’ll want to plan accordingly. There will be limited concessions available for purchase (ie. not free). The museum will be open after the movies, and if you’d like to explore you will need to purchase a pass.
Family Films
The family films begin on May 22nd and will run every Wednesday at 9am through July 31st in the Saturn V Hall Digital Theater. Note, the schedule is subject to change. To be sure nothing has changed, you can check our calendar before heading out.
Now, this is not a free baby sitting service. You have to actually go to the movies with your kids. No dropping them off and then bolting to do your errands. (Sorry parents!) You get to enjoy the movie with your kids!
Sci-Fi and Space Films
The sci-fi and space films will start on May 23rd and run every Thursday at 7pm through June 27th. If you really want to make a night of it, head over to the Space and Rocket Center early and grab dinner. On Thursdays the Apollo Courtyard will have a Beer Garden (“Biergarten”) featuring German food and (obviously) beer starting at 5pm until the movies begin at 7pm. Again the schedule is subject to change. To be sure nothing has changed, you can check our calendar before heading out.
The Movies
The Space and Rocket Center has picked out some terrific movies. Even if you (or your little ones) have seen some of these movies, how often do you get the chance to see movies on the big screen once they’ve come out on DVD? Not too often… And some of these movies were made for the big screen. Like Pixar’s Wall-E, Monstars, Inc (coming just in time for the prequel Monsters University BTW), Up!, and well you get the idea.
