Skip Caray always put it best when the score remained tied after nine at bats a piece. “Free Baseball!” This Tuesday every single trip to the plate, both home and the one that accompanies cutlery, will be free courtesy of supporters of your Mayor, Tommy Battle.

A Night with Tommy

Tuesday night, July 31st, friends of Tommy Battle together with the Huntsville Stars are teaming up to host a Young Professionals Open-Tent at the Stars game vs the Chattanooga Lookouts.

Get there at 6:00pm for free food and beverages (just tell the gate staff you are here for the event and they will let you in free), and the first pitch is scheduled for 6:43 (which I’ve always thought a perfectly logical time to start a baseball game).

A better place

In his four years in office, Mayor Battle has made Huntsville a better place for you to live. Here are a few things he has done to make your city more diverse and attractive:

• Partnering with the developers of the Belk Hudson Lofts, which will open 75 high end loft apartments on Washington Street this October. It will boast a rooftop terrace, workout facilities including a pilates/yoga room, and covered parking.
• Refashioning the Square to provide better parking and sidewalk access in order to promote restaurants/bars such as Commerce Kitchen, Amendment XXI and Adam’s Hot Dog Stand and events such as the Sidewalk Art Stroll. You’ll see this makeover extended down Washington Street soon for an even more enhanced leisurely experience.
• Promoting retail by efficiently constructing overpasses and improving roads along key retail corridors (North & South Parkway, for example).

Five Year Plan

Still not impressed with your city administrators? Here is a small sample of what is on tap within the next 5 years:

• 

  Twickenham Square: 200 urban apartments lofted over a grocery and retail strip built upon what used to be low density unsightly project housing. Why polish a turd when you can tear it down and build a diamond? Common sense—you the people expect it.

• The establishment of a downtown “entertainment district” that would further promote downtown retail by easing restrictions in a defined section of the city.
• Downtown Ballpark complete with apartments, restaurants, workout facilities, venues, office space, retail, and happy people. Yes, it will happen.
• Focus on green spaces, walking trails and a more bike friendly city.
