If you haven’t made it to the Dogs Days of Winter at Huntsville Botanical Gardens, you still have time. This Winter festival is going on through Wednesday, February 29th. My family recently decided to capitalize on the gorgeous weather and visit. Admission is free with membership, but be advised, there is a $1 admission per dog.
This is a great opportunity to get Rover or, in our case Boo Boo and Gi Gi, out of the house for some much needed exercise (so far we’ve not been allowed to fully hibernate this Winter which is great!). The gardens have a designated pathway around the perimeter of the garden for the pooches. The trail is clearly marked, and I enjoyed that it gave us a different view of the garden. We usually take our standard path through the nature trail (the Wizard of Oz treehouse is gone…boo…but the pirate ship treehouse is still ready for play) and then jump back over to the children’s garden. Via this perimeter path, we got to see some areas of the garden we don’t usually see and we LOVED the “No Leash Zone” in the back of the gardens.
The kids and dogs played hard and the kids were out like lights at 8PM. If you are a parent reading this and you can’t appreciate capitalizing on this opportunity then all I can say is, “TSK!” The barkitecture was fun to look at, albeit, my dogs and kids didn’t care to do much with it. However, I was wrangling two five-year-olds and two rambuctious Boston Terriers.
MOM TIPS: The barkitecture is a perfect photo opp for all of you pooch loving picture takers! Be sure to pick up treats for your pet at the admission area and, if you forget your own bags, they are providing plastic bags for clean up.
The BIG event for this festival happens this Saturday, February 4. The Bow Wow Bone-anza event includes a BOW WOW Fun Run 5K race, a 1-mile doggie dash, agility training demos, a pet photographer, and pet product vendors. For more information and activity updates, please visit the site at www.hsvbg.org.
So if the weather cooperates, grab your little ones, some friends, and of course the dogs, and get out and enjoy a barking good time!
About Rocket City Mom
Rocket City Mom is an online parenting website created in 2010 by a local mom who was new to Huntsville and looking for information on raising kids in the Tennessee Valley. The site now has more than 10 regular contributors, all local moms and dads, who share their insights and experiences with the goal of making life just a little easier for other local parents. On the site, you’ll find reviews of local attractions, a directory of services and businesses that have been mom approved, resource information (i.e. moms groups, support groups, birthday party planner, kids eat free) and much more!
