The annual Dragon Boat Festival hosted by the Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation has become a much-anticipated Decatur event.
This year the festival will take place on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Point Mallard Aquatic Center Beach.
What Is It?
More than 65 teams are registered to row throughout the day, providing plenty of action for those who want to come watch the races.
Teams consist of 20 paddlers, a drummer, and someone steering in an authentic, 46-foot-long dragon boat. All ages, skill levels, and physiques will be participating in the event, making it the ultimate team-building sport.
Each team is provided a tent site upon registration, where they gather and enjoy the events of the day while waiting on their heats.
The nature of the races make for a lively and fun tailgating type of atmosphere for both rowers and their supporters. Spectators are encouraged to come cheer on their friends, family, and co-workers participating in the races.
Various awards will be given, including Grand Champion, Top Fundraising Team, Best Dressed Drummer, Best Team Name, Best Team Uniform, and Best Tent Decorations.
General Information
Admission is free for those who want to come watch the races. Those interested in rowing may still be able to sign up as a single paddler (registration fees apply).
