If you haven’t been to the Whimsical Woods at Burritt on the Mountain, then drop everything and go now! If you can’t do that, let me suggest planning a trip on Saturday, September 21st because not only will you get to play in the Whimsical Woods but – it’s DAIRY DAY!
Burritt’s Dairy Day is fun for the entire family.
Education That’s Fun
Among the many special activities taking place on Dairy Day, I am most intrigued by the prospect of milking Boxy, the faux cow, with Jack or his mother at the Giant’s beanstalk. Not only is Dairy Day fun and full of great activities, it’s educational too.
I spoke to Caroline Kelly with Burritt on the Mountain and she said “Dairy Day is a fun way to learn about where a lot of your food comes from.”
The farm-to-table concept has risen once again in importance, but Caroline reminded me that Burritt has been doing it all along. It can be an eye-opening experience for children (and some adults) to learn that dairy is so much more than a case at the grocery store.

Children can experience what it would be like to milk a cow, visit with the real Burritt barnyard animals and hear the story of Huntsville’s own famous cow Lily Flagg.
Dairy Day Activities
Some of the other activities of the day include:
- Music
- Churning butter and ice cream
- Making a cow puppet & using your puppet in a puppet show
- Learn about and taste herbs
- Pan for gemstones in the sluice
- See a real blacksmith in action
Experience The Whimsical Woods
Dairy Day is always a favorite for Burritt visitors, but this year it’s nestled among The Whimsical Woods. My two boys, ages five and two, had a blast playing in the Whimsical Woods and there are activities suited to all ages with lots of shady spots for parents to sit in.
Since The Whimsical Woods only lasts until the end of September, this is a great time to experience this special Burritt creation. The folks at Burritt even suggest bringing a picnic lunch and making a day of it.
