Soviet Cosmonauts. Worldwide party. Fundraising for juvenile advocates. Costume contests. Dancing til 2am. What one event could possibly encapsulate ALL of these??
Yuri’s Night
The annual event commemorating and celebrating the anniversary of the first man in space. Yuri’s Night will celebrate this Saturday, April 7, 2012 from 6pm-2am at the Davidson Center. This celebration is also doing good for the Madison County chapter of Court Appointed Juvenile Advocates (CAJA), with all proceeds going to fund their services.
Who is Yuri?
Circling the earth in the orbital spaceship I marveled at the beauty of our planet. People of the world! let us safeguard and enhance this beauty- not destroy it! -Yuri Gagarin
50 years ago, Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin took his place in history as the first human to leave the bounds of Earth and enter outer space. Yuri rode in the now famous bell-shaped capsule named “Vostok 1.” Exactly 20 years later, the United States launched the Space Shuttle, a new type of spaceship, that propelled spaceflight into a new era.

“People should go out to Yuri’s night at least once to have a unique experience with their friends or co-workers that would only be accomplished in Huntsville, Houston or Cape Canaveral!!!” Carly Jordan, an attendee at last year’s event says.
Beneficiary: CAJA
Proceeds from the event will go to CAJA (Court Appointed Juvenile Advocates) of Madison County. Their mission is is to provide highly screened and trained volunteers to serve as advocates for children as their cases progress through the child welfare and judicial systems. I spoke to their Executive Director Doug Brown who reminds us all why CAJA’s services are so vital. “The need for abused and neglected children unfortunately is not diminishing. There are over 500 children in Madison County in the foster care system. These children need a volunteer advocate to be their voice in the court. “The court in turn, needs an extra set of eyes and ears that can provide independent and objective recommendations as to the best interest of the child. The CAJA program can continue to flourish with the support of the community. Supporting the CAJA program year round will help CAJA meet the expanding needs of this population in our community.” -CAJA Executive Director, Doug Brown
