Huntsville has so much to offer nowadays, that I find myself “discovering” new things all of the time. Things I should have known about for years.
A great example of this for me is the Land Trust Trails we have access to. Hiking is an awesome way to get in shape, feel great, and even change your brain.
One of my favorite trails starts at a gravel parking lot on top of Cecil Ashburn Drive.
How many times have you driven by that gravel parking lot and thought to yourself “I should probably check that out some time”, but you never do? The purpose of this blog is to convince you to stop by and check it out, it is worth your time.
Once you pull into the parking lot, simply head towards those wooden looking things. I’ve since learned that those are called trees, so you may be way ahead of me.
Follow the trail until you get to a sign with different trail options. You will turn left and follow and the Bill and Marion Certain Trail.
The Certains donated a lot of the land that made this hike possible. Thank you Certains.
The first half mile or so of the hike is the toughest part. It is almost all uphill, with a few places you requiring the use of fancy footwork to get through. You will know things are going to get better when you get to the top of a hill and there is a bench that has “Namaste” on it.
Stay on the Certain Trail and there are a few up and down spots, but mainly just a nice walk in the woods.
You will come to a fork in the road where you must choose your own adventure. No matter what decision you make, awesome views and selfie opportunities await you.
If you choose to stay on the Certain Trail, you will end up at a power line trail overlooking the Hampton Cove/ Big Cove area. If you choose to take the West Bluff Trail, there are great views of south Huntsville. If you stayed on the Certain Trail, look for a power line trail to your right, and it will take you to the West Bluff Trail.
All told, I would plan for 90-120 minutes and it is a moderately challenging hike.
Great trail to get you hooked on hiking as a regular activity.
Check it out and let me know what you think!
