Fancy dress balls are not just for people anymore! Events like the upcoming Greater Huntsville Humane Society Dog Ball are making sure that dogs have an opportunity to pull out their finest attire and hit the town, all while raising money for a charity close to their hearts!
I recently sat down to chat with Darci, one of this year’s VIDs (Very Important Dogs), who will be strutting her stuff on February 8th at this year’s Ball, Disco Down with the Hounds. She gave me the inside scoop on this year’s event plus all things fashion. Big thanks to our friends at Lolettas for letting us use their store for our photo shoot.

Where are you from?
I’m a Louisiana gal. I came to Huntsville with my mom Sara.
Day job?
Resident fashionista at Silhouette Boutique. Check us out on Facebook here.
That sounds like a blast! What does that entail??
I make sure Silhouette stays fashionable by advising our owner (and my mom) Sara about the latest fashion trends, so she can stock the store with the latest and greatest. When not staying up on fashion trends, I greet customers when they come in the store. And most important, I sit and look pretty.
You’ve clearly got amazing style. Who is your style inspiration?
I’m not sure I could pick just one! There’s Audrey Hepburn, who knew how to rock an amazing dress and some serious jewels all while looking like a classy lady. Then there’s Elizabeth Taylor who I appreciate for her love of all things sparkly and the ability to look amazing in lots of shiny. And last, but certainly not least, there’s my mom Sara, who taught me everything I know. She’s got to be the most stylish gal I know. And she also appreciates the sparkles.

Speaking of stylish, where did you get your fabulous Dog Ball dress?
KO Couture, Knock Out Fashion for Pets. Visit her Etsy store here. I can’t wait to walk down the runway in it!
Do you get nervous when you’re walking down the runway?
Nope. I see it as my chance to shine! And maybe get some treats from people if I really work the runway.
What advice would you give dogs walking the runway for the 1st time who might be nervous?
Have fun, relax, and just be yourself! And if you panic, just sit down. Your parent will pick you, and you can ride the rest of the runway. Though this could be a bit problematic for some of the larger dogs….

What is your runway strategy?
To twirl and capture everyone’s attention. And make eye contact.
Why is this event important to you?
This event is important to me because it raises money for the Greater Huntsville Humane Society. The GHHS is a wonderful no-kill shelter that finds home for more than 1,000 pets each year in our area so it’s important to try and support such a wonderful group.
What is your favorite part of the Dog Ball?
My favorite part of the night is seeing dogs from the GHHS matched up with their forever homes.
What can people expect from this year’s Ball?
A great time for a great cause! Here’s a quick rundown of the evening’s schedule:
- 5:45pm: Silent auction kicks off to the sounds of disco tunes
- 6ish: Guests can visit me and the other VIDs (Very Important Dogs) in the Mattress King VID Lounge while we’re prepping for our runway debut
- 7:15pm: Dinner is served!
- 8pm: The runway show begins!!

I’ve also heard there are some pretty amazing auction items…
Yes there are! This year we’ll have a live auction featuring fire hydrants painted by local artists. Not to mention a silent auction featuring items from local merchants. There are just too many to name. You can see a list of the auction donors on the Dog Ball website here. And if that wasn’t enough, Paradise Pet Resort and Spa is sponsoring a drawing for 2 tickets to the 2014 Westminster Dog Show PLUS $2,000 in debit cards!

You’re most welcome, Tammie! We love writing up events that benefit terrific causes like the Greater Huntsville Humane Society.
So cute! I can’t wait for the dog ball!
Thanks Bliss! Me too! Probably not as excited as Darci, but my dress isn’t nearly as amazing.
There was so many professional people taking photos, have any been posted if so where?
I’m not sure Gary. I know one group of photographers were taking pictures specially for the Humane Society, so I would check with them. You could also check the Event Magazine website; I know they were at the event as well.
