Recently I was in New York visiting family and we made my poor brother in law take us to do all the touristy things that all “real” New Yorkers hate. One of the things we did was take my five year old son to the American Natural History Museum. My brother in law, who has now lived in New York almost 15 years, was in awe over what all was inside.
enjoy Your Backyard
All I could think was if I lived in New York, I would come here all the time! Why not live and love the beauty of your own back yard! While on the subway, my son was loving his first underground train ride so much that a couple sitting across from us asked where we lived. When I said Huntsville, Alabama, do you know what they said? “Oh, Space Camp!” Touche, I mumbled to myself.
Although I have been to the US Space and Rocket Center many times as a child and young adult I haven’t taken my children but one time because in my mind it was for older children to enjoy. So first on my agenda when we got home from NYC was to go check out the new Mammoths and Mastodons Exhibit at the Space and Rocket Center.
A prehistoric visit
Once inside, we went straight for the “big elephants” as the kids called them. I had mine and my sisters kids with me, so I had children in age ranging from 2 to 10. Every one of them, including myself, were awestruck at each and every turn in the exhibit. It was just amazing!
As a mom I loved the many hands-on displays as well as many of the video and electronic activities. The video display that goes back in time over 30,000 years in high speed had all of us mesmerized. It may have been the only time that day that all children stood still.
The exhibit really brought to life how these animals lived – you can touch colossal mastodon teeth, feel Mammoth fur, joust with Mammoth Tusks and try to lift a 500lb Mammoth snack! Want to go? Our Valley Events is giving away tickets! Enter below!
