It’s officially October, Huntsville! I know that many of us love plants with a passion. So, I brainstormed on some houseplants you could easily find and use to give your home ALL the spooky Halloween vibes!
Raven ZZ Plant
The ZZ Plant is one of the easiest houseplants to care for, in my opinion. It can survive in low light conditions, and will not die right away if you forget to water it every so often. The unique factor about this particular ZZ, is that as it matures the leaves turn black. I think the unique small, black leaves make the Raven ZZ a perfect addition for Halloween.
Venus Fly Trap
Any carnivorous plant would be perfect for Halloween, but the Venus Fly Trap tops the list. These meat-eating plants love bright light and bog – like conditions. They will actually trap and ingest small bugs if the inside of the plant is disturbed, but don’t worry it’s not actually required for them to survive. You can find Venus Fly Traps at most of the local plant shops.
Ghost Bone Euphorbia
Upon first inspection of this particular plant, you will notice its unique crooked appearance and ghostly white color. I love this Euphorbia for these reasons, and the name is intriguing as well! With a name like “ghost bone,” you definitely should consider adding this to your collection for Halloween! Just remember that they LOVE bright light!
Cotton Ball Cactus
Also known as the Peruvian “Old Man” Cactus, this plant is vastly different than its siblings in that it grows fuzzy like a cotton ball. However, don’t be fooled – this one can still poke you! Stick some googly eyes on your cotton ball cactus to make it look like a mummy, or even an old man, or just leave it be and say your cactus is covered in cobwebs!
Alocasia “Dragon Scale”
A more forgiving Alocasia, the Dragon Scale is appealing to the eyes as well the sense of touch. Unlike most plants, the Dragon Scale Alocasia has a thicker, almost leathery texture. The color is also beautiful and dark, perfect for Halloween and the spooky season. Did we mention it happens to resemble the hide of a dragon? – Hence the name! SO COOL AND RARE!
Alocasia “Ebony”
This beautiful black plant is essential for any gothic or Halloween clad home. This particular Alocasia is a tad pickier than its counterparts, and will love medium to bright INDIRECT light with LOTS of humidity! Don’t be intimidated by these unique Alocasias. While they may require extra care, having one will definitely add a pop of gothic beauty in your home!
Spider Plant
When I think Halloween, spiders are definitely at the top of the list. Lucky for you guys the spider plant is not a real eight-legged arachnid. Resembling a spider with many legs, this super – easy plant adds an instant pop of color and style to your home. It will also produce little babies, or plantlets, that will grow and hang from the sides of the mother plant. These plantlets also resemble small spiders, adding yet another reason for its unique name.
“Rattlesnake” Calathea
Named for its interesting pattern, the Rattlesnake Calathea is one of the easier Prayer Plants to care for. It is light sensitive, meaning it will close its leaves at night and open them back during the day. Some people steer away from this plant because of the name but have no fear, this plant won’t bite! I might be a LITTLE bias, but the Rattlesnake Calathea is absolutely one of my favorites!
Zombie Plant
Native to Europe and Asia, this scary – sounding plant is anything but horrific. Adorned with tiny green leaves, this plant is called a zombie because it “plays dead” when touched, only to “come back to life” minutes later. HOW COOL!
