The Garden is full of interest and variety year-round, and the stunning colors in the spring and summer are simply not to be missed! Here are some of our favorite must-see blooms and lush vegetation you can enjoy this season, including when and where to find them in the Garden.
Plant: Hydrangeas

Description: Woody shrubs with delicate flowers ranging from white to pink to blue
When: May
Where: Bush Azalea Trail, Harbarger Hydrangea Border
What We Love about Hydrangeas: “Hydrangeas are the quintessential summer garden shrub, and everybody should have at least one! They are very easy to grow, especially the native varieties.” –Elaine Alspach, Garden Volunteer and Board of Directors Member
Plant: Water Lilies

Description: Floating plants with waxy leaves and large, open flowers
When: June/July
Where: Damson Aquatic Garden
What We Love about Water Lilies: “I enjoy the water lilies because they are a surprise of color every year. Water lilies are the jewel of the Garden throughout late spring and summer with their varied bloom times, hardiness, and varieties.” –Sherry Hoyt, Horticulture Manager at the Garden
Plant: Coneflowers

Description: Tall, brightly-colored flowers with a brown central cone
When: June/July
Where: Tweetsville, Native Plants Teaching Garden
What We Love about Coneflowers: “Coneflowers are awesome perennials that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. They come in beautiful bright colors like pink, purple, yellow, and orange, so they look great in any landscape!” –Rebecca Turk, Director of Learning and Public Engagement at the Garden
Plant: Ferns

Description: Leafy plants that come in a variety of shapes and sizes but do not have flowers
When: August
Where: Fern Glade
What We Love about Ferns: “The reason I like ferns is because they are everything plants should be. Some are evergreen, some are deciduous, some are lacy, and they all have individuality. They are so different, yet all in the same family.” –Peggy Patch, Garden Volunteer
