7 Fall Concerts Worth the Road Trip From Huntsville

As another festival season comes to a close, many of the bands that frequent them are beginning to plot solo shows across the country.

While we do have great opportunities in Huntsville to enjoy live music, some great up and coming acts are within a short driving distance of Huntsville this Fall. 

Here are seven of my top choices within an hour or so drive out of Huntsville.

Father John Misty

Ryman Auditorium in Nashville

If Kanye West suddenly decided to play quieter Americana music, it would sound a lot like the offerings from Father John Misty. The former drummer for Fleet Foxes has produced a few critically acclaimed albums in recent years, playing off of cultural references and feigned cynicism. 

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

Cannery Ballroom in Nashville

Father John Misty not your thing? King Gizzard will be providing a far more upbeat and psychedelic alternative the same night in Nashville. 

You might have guessed that the sound from this Australian band is just as crazy and out there as their name. For a sampling of what they’re about, load up “Head On / Pill” on Spotify, and set aside about fifteen minutes for an introduction to this trippy band.

Portugal. The Man

Iron City in Birmingham

If you’ve spent any time listening to Pandora or Alternative radio lately, you’ve by no doubt heard the song of the Summer, “Feel it Still” by this band.  Not only does Portugal. The Man have an incredible back catalog of other great high-energy songs, they are widely regarded as one of the best touring bands today.

Looking for a modern band that offers something a little different?  If you crossed Modest Mouse with Queen, you’d get a band within spitting distance of Rainbow Kitten Surprise.  Their sound is very moody and atmospheric, but is mixed against the flamboyance and energy of their lead singer, Sam Melo.  He may be one of the best frontmen touring today, putting on a wild ride that’s not to be missed.

LCD Soundsystem

This band doesn’t just put on a show, they throw a massive party. LCD Soundsystem reunited in 2016 after a ffive-year hiatus, bringing about rave reviews at festival appearances. Their mix of rock and electronic beats fuels the background music for what always turns into gigantic celebration.

Third Eye Blind

Iron City in Birmingham

Yes, this is the same band that produced those 90’s favorites “Semi Charmed Life” and “Jumper.”  Third Eye Blind has seen a resurgence in popularity on the festival circuit in recent years, and their newfound following is not built fully on nostalgia either.  Their most recent lineup has solidified them as one of the most high energy bands touring today.  You’ll be singing their old hits and loving their new ones just the same.

Bon Iver

Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center

Just announced, Bon Iver will be coming to Birmingham in early November. While they’ve been largely a very quiet and soft acoustic band in the past, Bon Iver’s recent album mixes genres, playing around with synthesizers and electronics to give the music an even more longing and emotional feeling.
