We’ve known Birmingham is a fantastic city for food long before it was featured in the recent Buzzfeed article on the most underrated foodie cities in America.

Getting nationwide acclaim in such an article is a good way to make believers out of those who have not been as fortunate as we have to try many of the gems in the Magic City.
Here are some of our favorites to help you get started eating your way through Birmingham.
Feast and Forest
This was the first coffee shop we ever visited in Birmingham, and possibly one of our all time favorites.
Aside from coffee, we quickly learned that Pasta Friday is a MUST here!
Each Friday Feast and Forest offers a dish featuring different types of homemade pasta such as spaghetti, fettuccine, farfalle, and tagliatelle. Get there early though, as they tend to sell out quickly!
Woodlawn Cycle Cafe
One of the things I think we both look forward to most when traveling is picking which coffee shop to go to.
When trying a new coffee shop, we always stick with a classic latte for comparison purposes.
We love the location of Woodlawn Cycle.
It’s out of the downtown hustle and bustle, and you can truly relax here. There are also some really cool local shops next door, and even Huntsville’s own Piper and Leaf is down the street.
Saw’s Soul Kitchen
I’m pretty confident that Huntsville needs (and would love) a Saw’s Soul Kitchen. This is not your typical BBQ joint. Pork and Greens: say no more. Imagine cheese grits topped with greens and smoked pork, finished off with crispy onions and a sweet and tangy sauce.
If we had a list of our top 10 favorite dishes, this would easily make the cut. (Note to self: we need to make that list.)
Hattie B’s
You’ve probably been to their Nashville location, but people are still surprised to learn Hattie B’s has a location in Birmingham.
We typically stick with the classic breast/wing or leg/thigh plate with the medium heat level. Our advice, do NOT get the “Shut the Cluck Up!!!” unless you are a brave soul who likes to torture yourself.
Do however get the pimento mac and cheese and black eyed peas.
Babalu Tacos & Tapas
We truly stumbled upon Babalu, and I’m so glad we did! I love that this restaurant is tapas style, so sharing is encouraged.
Of course we ordered the tableside guac, regular and watermelon margaritas, and 4 different tacos which were all incredible.
And YAY for blue corn tortillas!
