I have a confession.
I love Once the Musical. Not just love, but love-love-love LOVE it. It’s one of my top 10 favorite musicals of all time. And that’s a sacred, well-curated list.
The fact that Broadway Theatre League is bringing it to Huntsville January 27 – 29, for 5 performances, is a dream come true.

What’s So Special About Once?
I was lucky enough to see Once on Broadway in 2012, the same year that it won the Tony Award for Best Musical. It won a total of 8 Tony Awards that year.
I was already a fan of the movie Once, and the music. You might remember the song “Falling Slowly” because it won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2007?
To say that it’s award-winning is an understatement.

But I didn’t know quite know what to expect from the stage production.
It’s gripping from the moment you enter the theatre and the unexpected laughter is a great counter to the heartbreak that is at the center of the story.
If you are unfamiliar with Once, I will say this love story is not quite what you are expecting. Guy meets Girl, but it’s much more complicated than that. Sort of like real life and less like traditional musical theatre. But that’s a good thing.
Here are a few other items that I think are worth knowing in advance:
- The Dublin pub set does double duty as a real bar at intermission.
- The performers do double duty too, they are also the band.
- A modern story that could happen today. If “old-fashion” is not for you, this might be one to try!
- Gripping from the first note. This show starts in such a powerful way that you are transported immediately.
- Humor. You’ll laugh, but it will balance out the tears that will come later. One word: vacuum.
If you don’t take my advice on anything else, please take it on this. Go see Once. I’ll accept your thanks in the form of public accolades (or gift cards!).
