Whether you are addicted to Snapchat, Pokemon Go or Prisma, odds are there is an app that you’d rather be opening right now than whatever it is that you are doing.

This got us thinking about what apps can help us out locally. The ones that add value to our lives as Huntsvillians.
What are the essential apps for Huntsville?
We went looking and found a few must-haves for your downloading pleasure.
1. Explore Huntsville
Explore Huntsville is an app that was originally the Rocket City Mom app and is a collaboration between RCM and the Huntsville Madison County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Find information about local attractions, family-fun and deals.
2. Baron Saf-T-Net
If we know anything about being living in this area, it’s that the weather is something you always keep an eye on. Saf-T-Net alerts you when you are in the path of bad weather. Essential for life in the Tennessee Valley.
3. Huntsville Connect
Need to report a pothole, blocked drainage ditch or broken street light? The Huntsville Connect app allows you to send a quick note that will get to the correct department. Easy peasy!
Editor’s Note: I used the Huntsville Connect app yesterday. I got an acknowledgement of my issue within 30 min. Had someone look at the issue within 1.5 hours and got an resolution by the end of the day. This may not be typical, but I was super impressed!
4. Uber
Uber is new to Huntsville and not always super available. But the app is very easy to use, convenient and typically gets you a ride in a timely fashion. It’s just good to have the option when you need a lift around town.
5. Nextdoor
Everyone we know belongs to a Nextdoor community. It’s an app with similarities to social media, but geographically separated by area.
Honorable Mention:
Huntsville Utilities App
Allows you to pay your bill and view an outage map. Since so many of you reading this use Huntsville Utilities, it might be worth checking out.
Shipt
On demand grocery service is more than just a pick up option at Wal-Mart. Shipt allows you to shop through the app and have your groceries delivered to your house. We’ve used it…. it’s pretty convenient.
Happy local app seeking. Let us know if we missed your favorite local app. We are always on the look out for ways to make life easier in Huntsville.
