Inspiration can be found in the most simple and unexpected places.
Sometimes, it can even be found in the creative spark of others.
That was the idea behind Folk Couture: Fashion and Folk Art, an upcoming exhibit that will make its home at the Huntsville Museum of Art from April until the end of June.

Fashion & Art
This unique take on art exhibitions was conceived by New York City’s American Folk Art Museum in 2014, when thirteen up-and-coming fashion designers were invited to create works of haute couture.
The catch was that their inspiration had to be taken by artworks from the Museum’s existing collection, which includes traditional folk art and works by self-taught artists.
In order to give this exhibit a proper welcome to the Rocket City, The Huntsville Museum of Art Guild is hosting a designing competition named Fashion Fusion Face-off, involving emerging fashion students from the University of Alabama and Auburn University. Four students from each university have had the opportunity to create original works of couture inspired by pieces in the Huntsville Museum of Art’s own collection.
These pieces are on display in the Down Home: Contemporary Southern Masters exhibition March 29 – April 7, as a preview for Folk Couture: Fashion and Folk Art, running from April 10 – June 26.
And don’t miss Folk Fusion, the grand opening event for Folk Couture Thursday, April 7 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm. Guests can sample delicious food and drink, congratulate the winning designer of Fashion Fusion Face-off and groove to the appropriately folky band The Sweeplings.
