If You Want to Be Fancy
- Level of Difficulty: Easy
- Sewing Required: Nope!
- Additional Skills Needed: None
You know I’m all about the fancy and the sparkles, and so I’m going to start out with this bow dress (seen in the graphic to your left), an out-of-the-box, DIY tacky sweater idea that I created for last year’s Santa Pub Crawl.
Here’s how to make your own:
- Buy a cheap dress (I got one at Forever 21 for $12)
- Buy several bags of bows (I used about 3 1/2 big bags from Hobby Lobby)
- Get a hot glue gun
- Glue the bows directly to the dress
- Don’t worry about putting the bows in a straight line; It’s more about fitting them together
- Keep gluing until the dress is full!
- I left room for a belt
If You Want to Be Naughty
- Level of Difficulty: Easy
- Sewing Required: Nope!
- Additional Skills Needed: Ability to use Microsoft Word
- Instructions on Iowa State Daily
For those looking to be a little naughty this Tic Tac Ho sweater is right up your alley. And it’s super simple! All you need is iron on transfer paper (available at Target or Walmart), a cotton sweatshirt, fabric glue, pom-pom ball and decorations.
If You Want to Be Nice
- Level of Difficulty: Medium
- Sewing Required: Nope
- Additional Skills Needed: Shopping
- Instructions on I Love to Create
For an easy-peasy ugly Christmas sweater, all you need are a sweater, a couple of holiday ties, ribbon and some fabric glue. To add an extra tacky element make sure none of the tie match at all!
If You Want to Be Awesome

- Instructions on Really Awesome Costumes
Want to knock everyone’s socks (or sweaters) off with your tacky sweater? Then try this AWESOME (and easy) DIY Christmas Tree Sweater from Really Awesome Costumes. All you need is a green sweater, some tinsel, ornaments and glue or safety pins!
If You’re Expecting
- Level of Difficulty: Medium

Just because you’re expecting doesn’t mean you have to be left out of the tacky sweater fun! Just take a look at this adorable (yet tacky) reindeer sweater from Running with Scissors!
If You’re Part of a Couple
- Level of Difficulty: Hard
- Sewing Required: Yes (can substitute fabric glue or hot glue)

If You’re a Dog
- Level of Difficulty: Easy
- Sewing Required: No
- Additional Skills Needed: None
- Instructions on Irresistible Pets
My favorite 4-legged buddy (and OVE blogger) Widget wanted me to include this DIY Christmas Tacky sweater idea for all the pups out there. And I must say it is adorable, although not designed for Widget; he wouldn’t even make it to the car before eating all the decorations on the sweater!
If You’re a Geek
- Level of Difficulty: Medium
- Sewing Required: Nope!
- Additional Skills Needed: Drawing
- Instructions on Punk Projects
If you’re a true geek, then go full on nerd with your tacky sweater like this Trek the Halls example from Punk Projects. Other themes I’d love to see at Thursday’s party: Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Sherlock…
If You Want a Little Something Extra: Accessories!
Top off your tacky sweater with one of these equally tacky accessories! Headband instructions on The 1st Apartment & In Lala Land. Hat for sale at Party City along with quite a few other festive accessories.
