Why It's Great to be a Foodie in Huntsville

Huntsville may not be a San Fransisco or a New York with a dizzying amount of food options clamoring for your attention 24/7.

But that’s no reason for foodies to despair!

Huntsville’s food scene has lots to offer and it seems like every day brings something new!

In no particular order, here are 10 reasons why I love being a foodie in Huntsville.

1. Greene St. Market

Stroll around this downtown market to pick up produce, cheese, baked goods, meat, kettle corn, iced tea and more. Borrow a bike and check out the surrounding area.

Not close enough or Thursday evenings don’t work for you? We have lots of other vibrant farmer’s markets all summer long where you can find perfectly ripe peaches and juicy tomatoes. During the off season, opt to pop into to Greene St. Market’s store, open 5 days a week all year long.

2. Doe Run Farms CSA

CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture”. Basically, you pay upfront to provide farmers with (literal) seed money and in return you receive a box of produce all season long. We’ve been members for 5 years now and each year we are able to enjoy straight from the farm produce, try new to us produce, and support local farms.

In addition to Doe Run Farms, many other local farms offer CSA programs so you can find the one that works best for you.

3. Straight to Ale

Huntsville has an astonishing variety of local breweries (and even our own distillery), many of which have tap rooms where you can enjoy their brews and attend local events. Straight to Ale earns a special place in my heart with its Tuesday board game nights.

4. Piper and Leaf

Handblended teas made with local ingredients and sold ice cold and sweetened in mason jars. It’s hard to imagine something which more perfectly encapsulates both “modern” and “southern”. They’ve also cornered “delicious” and “refreshing”.

If you prefer your tea hot, unsweetened, or sparkling just pop in and visit them at their shop where you can also buy looseleaf tea to brew at home. If tea’s not your thing, you might want to check out Jubilee cold brewed coffee.

5. Pizzelle’s Confections

Gourmet truffles handmade with local ingredients and names like Nut Job, Depth Charge, and Steel Magnolia. They also offer rich drinking chocolate and creamy caramels.

If chocolate isn’t your thing, check out Suzy’s Pops (popsicles) or Crazy Bakey Things (cookies) for other delicious treats.

6. Jordan Lane

Just north of the 565, there is a stretch of Jordan Lane which delights me. Driven by proximity to the arsenal, UAH, and the transplant rich Research Park you can find a diverse array of cuisine. Korean, Greek, Vietnamese, Cajun, Indian, Chinese, Mexican, and a Sandwich shop rub shoulders, vying for customers.

And throughout Huntsville, you see the same pattern writ large. In an area known for our BBQ and meat and three shops, we also offer a chance to explore other cuisines.

7. Pinhook Provisions

The number of food trucks in Huntsville has exploded over the last few years. Pinhook Provisions provides an easy to find, well-equipped place to enjoy their wares.

Of course, you can also find them around town at food truck festivals, local events, local breweries, and in their more established locations.

8. Cooking with C.C.

Cooking classes offered monthly from an accomplished chef who will not only teach you to make wonderful dishes but will also explain the science behind the cookery.

9. Grub South

Break out of same old boring delivery options by having food from your favorite local spots delivered straight to you. Whether you are stuck at the office for lunch or just don’t want to leave the comfort of your home, great food is just a few clicks away.

10. Southbrew Coffee

Enjoy a cup of coffee or pick up a little something to brighten someone’s day. In addition to the coffee shop standards made from locally roasted beans, you’ll find cheesecakes from Belle Chevre, gluten free treats from Mason Dixon Bakery and Bistro, and tea from Piper and Leaf (brewed or loose leaf).
