Live music may be one of the best outdoor summer activities in downtown Huntsville.
What could be better than warm summer nights outside jamming to an awesome band?
Big Spring Park, Courthouse Square, and other areas nearby have been host to a variety of bands this summer, exposing residents to new music and showcasing the vibrant artists in Huntsville’s community.
Unfortunately, summer is coming to a close, but live music is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, historic Downtown is kicking it up a notch by playing host to local and regional jazz musicians for two live events.
Jazz in the Park
When: August 30
Where: Big Spring Park East
What time: 6-9 pm
Cost: Free
Magic City Smooth Jazz in Birmingham, AL, is partnering with the City of Huntsville Office of Multicultural Affairs to bring this live music event.
Performing will be the award-winning cool jazz saxophonist Steve Cole, with an opener by “soul jazz” trumpeter David Jones.
Concert goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and grab some grub from food trucks stationed at the event.
Jazz in the Park is part of a year long concert series performed throughout North and Central Alabama for free. To check out more dates, visit the Magic City Smooth Jazz website.
Alabama Women in Jazz Festival
When: September 19
Where: Big Spring Park East
What time: 2-8 pm
Cost: $11 – $32
This one-of a kind festival features exclusively female jazz musicians, and promotes support of female musicians throughout Alabama.
Funds raised at this event will go towards the Valley Arts and Entertainment Scholarship fund for females majoring in music. There will be food, vendors and more, so don’t forget to bring a lawn chair!
This is the second Women in Jazz program put on by Valley Arts and Entertainment, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to engaging youth in the community with music programs.
