As you no doubt guessed when you awoke this morning, today is Pi Day. The day celebrating that magical mathematical number 3.14 (since today is 3/14 for those who may have missed that connection). But most importantly it is a day to CHOW DOWN ON PIE! I am officially extending this to include all sweets, in my very official capacity as Huntsville’s queen of all things sweet-being such a sweetie pie myself (see how slick that was??).
Anybody want to challenge me? I dare anyone to beat my love of cupcakes and all things sweet.
Ways to Celebrate Pi Day
You may be wondering, just how does one celebrate a holiday dedicated to both mathematics and sweets? I’m so glad you asked! I shall tell you!
Learn about Pi at Sci-Quest
Sci-Quest has a mathematically delicious day of celebrations planned for 3/14. At their Pi Day, you’ll learn more about the fantastically irrational number of pi and participate in a delicious Pi(e) Walk. Pi Day is FREE with general admission and if you bring in a pie for the Pi(e) Walk, you will receive a free child admission with a paid adult. All extra pies not used in the Pi(e) Walk will be donated to a local charity, so make sure you bring a pie.
Indulge Your Sweet Tooth
This is my personal favorite, and I shall personally be celebrating this way! Head out to a local bakery and pick up your favorite sweet treat.

Teach Your Friends
If you have friends who are not quite as up to snuff as you and I on all things mathematical, take this day as a chance to bring them up to speed. Whether you want to educate them gradually with a Pi Day e card, buy them a book on the subject, send them a video, or get them a snazzy t-shirt, know that you are doing your part to educate the masses. Want something a bit more hands on? Try these pi day inspired crafts!
Bake Your Own Pi/Pie
If you’re a rockstar baker, then don’t buy a pie! Bake one! (And let me know when it’s done, so I can have a slice or 2. Ok maybe 3, but who’s counting? It IS a holiday!) Feeling adventurous? Want to try a new recipe on this auspicious holiday? Then try one of these from the official Pi Day recipe catalogue:

- Larkin Grant (me): My grandmother’s chocolate pie
- Amy Pope (our resident foodie): Coconut cream pie
- Mayor Tommy Battle (think you probably know him): Apple pie

My favorite pie is Marie Callender’s FRESH Strawberry Pie. And I can’t get it here. It’s only available at Marie Callender restaurants and only during the season when fresh strawberries are available. So only like May to mid-August or so. They take HUGE ripe strawberries, slice them in half, pile them about 4-5 inches deep in a freshly-baked flaky pie crust and pour a strawberry-flavored glaze over the whole thing. My mouth is watering!
And my second favorite pie is whatever kind I have at the moment.
Thanks John… you just made me REALLY hungry! 😉
My favorite is chocolate and I also really love Kentucky Derby pie. Yum!
Now I’m going to go get a snack.
awesome recipes!
