This started off as a quest for “art” that you’ve never noticed, but instead I just found a few really cool things to share with you. Some you may have noticed before, but some you may not.
Huntsville is full of surprises like that!
Elks Opera House Drama Masks
These stone masks originally decorated the Elks Opera House / Theater, which was located on Eustis Street directly behind the Tallulah Bankhead building. Over 100 years old now, they sit near the entrance of the Von Braun Center Concert Hall. A must-see the next time you walk by.
Painted Border at AM Booth’s Lumberyard
Most noticeable if you are heading into Lone Goose Saloon, this painted border is an unexpected surprise. Makes me think of happy little trees!
Stained Glass Dragon at Kaffeeklatsch
One of my favorite and fun sights in Downtown Huntsville. Even though the Kaffeeklatsch Bar is closed, the dragon remains in the window as always.
Frogs on the Terry Hutchens Building
Pointing out the frogs that ring the top of the Terry Hutchens building is one of my favorite things to do for Huntsville newbies. Maybe I’m showing them to one of you for the first time!
Stained Glass Windows at First Baptist Church
This church on Governors Drive is most recognized by the mosaic mural on the front, while the stained glass windows are pretty much unnoticeable from the outside. Step inside however, especially in the morning when the sun is still in the east, and they are stunning and awe-inspiring (and kinda space-y!). Trust me that these pictures do them no justice.
Mosaic Inside the Madison County Courthouse
The Courthouse gets a bad rap, but I’ve always loved its columns on the outside and groovy staircase inside. (It’s okay if you judge me a little.) I especially love the HUGE mural inside and the way it complements the staircase. Groovy!
What are some of your favorite things that most people have overlooked or never noticed? Let us know in the comments. I can’t wait to see what I’ve missed.

Amy Jones has been a marketing professional in Huntsville for 20 years, with experience in all aspects of marketing, pr, media relations, event management, digital content, and design. Amy is the proud and busy momma of two boys, who keep things loud and fun. For fun she skateboards, rides her scooter, and kayaks (though sadly not at the same time!).
What a wonderful idea, to showcase these little hidden gems. I’ve seen a few but the others are new to me. This should be a running feature!
I read that there is supposed to be a tombstone date on the Mason Building on Clinton. Have not had a chance to look myself. Apparently there were broken tombstones used in the making of the building.
I’ve never heard of that one, but will check it out! Thanks!
I like pointing out the bullet holes in the limestone of the First National Bank by Big Spring Park.
That’s a good one!! Thanks!
Love “Cool Things . . . In Huntsville. Here’s another: initials of some of Huntsville’s prominent citizens carved into the brick at the side entrance of the old YMCA, from the olden days in which the old downtown Y was the site for city basketball games and indoor swimming.
I’ve never heard that story, Janet. THANKS for sharing! Will have to go look for sure.
