If you love to read, odds are you also like to talk about your favorite books. Gushing over a good read or critiquing a bad one (looking at you Mr. Grey), book lovers generally like to talk about it.
Que the Book Club.
Whether formal or casual, a good Book Club is a great social experience and a fun way to discuss your latest obsession.
Looking for a Book Club:
If you are ready to join up, here are 2 ideas:
- Start with the Huntsville Madison County Public Library. There are many listed on their page, so one might be a good fit. If no upcoming book is listed for the club you’re interested in, contact the Library and see if it’s still active. It may just need someone to get it going again.
- New First Fridays Book Club is at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, Studio 131. Looks fun!
- Beloved Books at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment hosts the Beloved Book Club. Next meeting is March 5, 6:30 pm, Studio 257.
How to Start Your Own Book Club:
Nervous about joining an existing Book Club or can’t find one that fits your interests? Start your own.
Here are a few tips for beginners:
- You need a few book-loving friends or acquaintances to agree to meet on a regular basis.
- Decide what kind of books to read – style, genre, theme, etc.
- Have some general club rules established – regular meeting schedule, who brings the cheese dip (just kidding!), and rules on participation and discussion.
Suggestions for hosting your Book Club:
- Discuss over brunch! Bookmark (ah!) our Brunch Guide.
- Books & brews – enjoy lively discussion while supporting your local taproom.
- Try a new restaurant each month.
Tell us about your Book Club in the comments below, or if we inspired you to start one. We love to hear from our readers!

Amy Jones has been a marketing professional in Huntsville for 20 years, with experience in all aspects of marketing, pr, media relations, event management, digital content, and design. Amy is the proud and busy momma of two boys, who keep things loud and fun. For fun she skateboards, rides her scooter, and kayaks (though sadly not at the same time!).
I love book club because it makes me read books I normally wouldn’t read.
Me too! But I would read all the time if I could. Too many books….too little time.
I love our book club because you never know what books are going to end up on the list that year!
True story! Happy reading in 2015.
