When was the last time you went to the theatre? Put aside your excuses and get out your wallets! Broadway Theatre League is bringing a brand new production of Jekyll & Hyde the Musical to Huntsville AL November 21-23, 2014. With tickets as low as $17 you literally can’t afford to miss this show!
A Makeover
There have been a number of Jekyll & Hyde productions, including Broadway and off, but the one coming to BTL is a brand new show, directed by Paul Stancato. So forget your assumptions about this show!
“We took a whole new approach to the show. We really wanted to get away from what’s been done before,” Paul told me.
“Our production centers around our choices. We wanted to examine how our choices affect ourselves but also other people. What are we willing to sacrifice? In the end, do the ends justify the means?” Paul said.
A New Look

This theme lead to the show’s new look: period dress on a set that’s more useful and modern.
“For the set we imagined what it would be like if today’s people were living in the world of the play,” Paul explained.
One Man
In past productions, the “Jekyll/ Hyde” character has always been portrayed as 2 very distinct men, one man and one monster, often with elaborate costume changes. But Paul takes a different approach, one that rings true to his vision of the show.
“In this production Jekyll is very much one man who has two personalities and is struggling to deal with that, not two totally different people. Essentially he’s struggling with schizophrenia.”
Translation: No big flashy transitions from Jekyll to Hyde. In this show, the struggle is more internal.
“Jekyll is more of the classic every man character. Every person has good and evil inside of them; every person struggles with making choices based on what they think is good. This show explores the question: can we live in a world where we exercise just one option?” Paul pondered.
Sing Along
Paul wants to make one thing clear: this is not another stuffy musical.
“If you like music on the radio then you will like this show. The songs have a very contemporary feel. There are lots of great songs that happen to be inside a musical.”
In fact you’ve probably heard at least one song from Jekyll & Hyde without even realizing it. “This Is the Moment” has been covered over 1,000 times and was even sung twice at the Olympic Ceremonies!
Fans of the show don’t worry! Paul is a huge Frank Wildhorn fan and remained true to his score including all the classic songs you know and love:
- In His Eyes
- This Is the Moment
- A New Life
- And even Bring On the Men, which is typically cut but Paul put back in this production
Cast
Paul uses a younger, sixteen person cast to create a new, reinvigorated Jekyll.
“They’re the most talented cast I’ve ever worked with,” Paul bragged.
And that’s saying something! Paul’s credits include: The Wedding Singer (Broadway & 1st National Tour) & The Lion King (1st National Tour).
Judge for yourself. Watch Aleks Knezevich perform “This Is the Moment.” You’ll see Aleks in Huntsville.

I’m a “Jekkie” but am looking forward to seeing the revised play. However, I would still rather see the song “Good and Evil” put back in the show. Not sure when that got changed. I noticed last time J&H was in Huntsville, it had changed. I sorta thought that was the song that was supposed to epitomize the struggle going on in the play. I at least got to see it performed by the Broadway cast.
I’m a Jekkie too and can’t wait to see this re-vamped version. Paul Stancato is a wonderful director so I feel confident that it’ll be killer (pun intended!).
