On Saturday, October 18, 2014 there will be 7,000 runners and walkers turning the streets of Huntsville pink — for a great cause.
The 11th annual Liz Hurley 5K Run and Survivor’s Walk takes place October 18 starting at 8:00 am at the corner of Lowe Avenue and Adams Street near Huntsville Middle School, and it’s become one of the biggest — if not the biggest — running events in Huntsville.
It benefits the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and held during breast cancer awareness month.
About the Run
The men and women’s run/walk starts at 8:00 am followed by the Survivor’s walk at 10:00 am. Registration fee is $30.
The run was started in 2003 after Liz Hurley, a local television personality, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. The Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund was established for the purpose of creating awareness about breast cancer, purchasing equipment for breast cancer diagnosis and providing continuing education for the Breast Center staff.
Since its inception, more than $3 million has been raised. Proceeds from this year’s run will help bring digital tomosynthesis to Huntsville Hospital’s Breast Center. This technology creates a 3-dimensional picture of the breast using X-rays. Early results with digital tomosynthesis will make breast cancer easier to detect in dense breast tissue.
