When people think of the VBC Playhouse, what usually comes to mind?
Plays, fancy costumes, musical numbers and gigantic set pieces.
What isn’t normally thought of: beer, indie bands, and a giant dance floor.
Tuesday, June 17 at 8:00 pm the popular play venue will have all three of those things, as Rock/Americana band The Dirty Guv’nahs Huntsville, AL tour stop will be at the VBC Playhouse.
The Playhouse Goes Indie
According to the Von Braun Center’s Assistant Director Brandi Quick, it was the growing activism of young professionals in Huntsville that led to the idea of a small concert being held downtown.
“Representatives from different Young Professionals groups came together with Downtown Huntsville, Inc. to think of a way to get more people their age interested in downtown” she states.
“There were suggestions to bring an indie band downtown, so we looked at different venues and landed on the Playhouse”.
The dark, intimate theatre turned out to be the ideal space for a rock concert. With some of the theater’s rows of seating pushed back to make space for a dance floor, all the Playhouse needed was a few tables to hold drinks and a rock band to light up the stage.
Make It a Party
There will be a free Pre-Concert Party in the VBC Playhouse Courtyard! Sugar Belle Cupcakes and the I Love Bacon Truck will be parked in the side parking lot, with local craft beer sold and live music by The Flannel Umbros.
During the concert pints of local craft beer will be sold for $5, with tables set up in the middle of the floor for drinks.
The very back rows of seats in the theatre will be available for people that want to sit down during the concert.
Not that you’ll want to do much sitting when The Dirty Guv’nahs play.
Who are The Dirty Guv’nahs?
Based out of Knoxville, TN, The Dirty Guv’nahs are an upbeat blend of gritty Rock and bluesy Americana.
Lead singer James Trimble has been likened to dynamic stage presence Mick Jagger, and combined with the rest of the band delivers passionate stage performances.
A staple at performance venues throughout the Southeast, The Dirty Guv’nahs will be adding the VBC Playhouse to their repertoire as they perform for their “Hearts on Fire” tour.
