The annual Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic is one of the most beloved local events, and one of the best-kept secrets, in Alabama.
Every Memorial Day weekend, hundreds of hot air balloon enthusiasts come to Point Mallard Park to see and participate in the events surrounding the largest hot air balloon festival in the state.
See It to Believe It
The celebration kicks off early on the morning of Saturday, May 24, 2014 (6:30 am) with the Hound and Hare Race, followed by more attractions throughout the day and into Sunday, May 25.
Those who drag themselves out of bed early enough can see the breathtaking sight of nearly 60 vibrantly colorful balloons inflate and begin to rise slowly over the trees – definitely a must-see.
The balloons go wherever the wind blows, and that is part of the excitement – you never know where they will land.
For those not able to make it early in the morning, there are more balloon events throughout the weekend, including a balloon glow, tethered rides, and a key-grab race on Sunday morning.
There is also live music throughout the weekend, arts and crafts, a tractor show, antique cars, fireworks, and more.
Admission to the Jubilee is free. Shuttle service is available from Wolverine Park and GE (Point Mallard Drive) for a small fee.

Helpful Hints
- Check the weather before you come. If you are wanting to see the balloons go up, make sure they are going to fly. Weather conditions, including wind, can definitely affect the schedule, so stay informed.
- Get there early. If you are not wanting to miss all the action, factor in extra time for parking and walking to the balloon field. Depending on traffic, this can eat up an extra 20 minutes, and you might miss it all if you don’t plan accordingly.
- Bring your camera. Like I said, it really is a beautiful sight. You might want to capture it.
- Bring a blanket or chair. The balloons are in the middle of a field, and the grass is often damp.
