Since it’s introduction in the 90’s, Rock the Vote has been a powerful tool in engaging young voters, both in encouraging them to vote and to interact with their local candidates.
The Committee of 100 YP program is again hosting a Rock the Vote 2014 event in Huntsville, Tuesday, April 22, 2014. The event is presented by Curse, Inc. and it’s free to attend.
Who & What
The Committee of 100 YP, an organization focused on economic development, public education, and civic engagement has hosted this event twice before. In 2012, over 400 attendees and 50 candidates participated.
Geared toward YPs age 21 – 40, there are already 52 candidates confirmed to attend this year.
Rock the Vote will have free food, beverages, live music and door prizes.
Attendees can register to vote and learn about their voting districts.
Why
I asked this year’s Rock the Vote planning committee members Tracy Doughty and Chris Hanback why YP’s should attend.

“It makes an impression on the political candidates to see the number of young professionals that attend this event. I think any opportunity for our group to have their voices heard is one that should be taken advantage of.” – Chris Hanback [/column]

“YPs should attend to be more informed about the political process, meet the candidates, and make them aware that our vote counts. YP’s can also register to vote, learn about their districts, and which candidates are running for office in their particular areas.” – Tracy Doughty
With over 50 political candidates taking part, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about each one.
