For a student in the Grissom Theatre department, the start of production for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever 2013 is the start of the holiday season. Yes, September is a little early for most, blatantly ignoring the widespread rule of not celebrating Christmas until after Thanksgiving, but by ignoring one tradition, students are able to begin a tradition of their own.
Christmas Tradition 
As The Best Christmas Pageant Ever occurs annually it has become a tradition for many people. Many students perform in the play every year of their high school careers. A majority of cast members could recite the entire show by themselves. For many families, seeing the show is just as integral a part of Christmastime as decorating the tree or making Christmas cookies.
The Story
In The Best Christmas Pageant Ever 2013 the church’s annual Christmas pageant is thrown into chaos when the pageant’s customary director breaks her leg and “the worst kid’s in the whole history of the world”, the Herdmans, join the cast in the leading roles. Beth Bradley, daughter of new pageant director Grace narrates as the Herdmans bring new life to the stale pageant and learn the true meaning of Christmas.
The Same but Different
Although as narrator Beth Bradley says The Best Christmas Pageant Ever 2013 is always “the same old Christmas story with the same old carols and the same old Mary and Joseph,” the unique thing about it is that the show is that the actors bring the story to life in a different way every year.
Sometimes Grace Bradley is sassy and high strung; sometimes she is timid and over- whelmed. I like to think that my Grace Bradley is hardworking and caring, but somewhat frazzled. These character variations bring new life to the production, making it a show not to miss year after year.
