Pop Up Park Competition in Downtown Huntsville

I am so glad that the Pop Up Park concept has made it to Huntsville. As the shift towards creating better downtown spaces continues to evolve across America, this concept has shown to be a great way to get people talking about simple and cost effective ways to enhance lifestyles. Started by a Landscape Architecture firm in 2005, this simple concept was a way to explore the values that public space can provide.

The Event

Pop Up Where?

As urban areas have continued to grow, often times it has been at the expense of common areas and green pockets that allow the public to sit, rest, recharge and do nothing if they want.

Pop Up What?

Pop Up Parks have gone well beyond the original tree, turf and bench elements. Thoughts such as urban farming, helping kids to understand where their food comes from, art installations which beautify the public realm and can strike up conversations about the piece and wonder what the thoughts were behind it, bike repair stations helping to spur the thought of moving away from the car, outdoor classrooms which can demonstration a variety of ideas such as ecology.

These spaces are really only limited to what the designer’s imagination can think of.

Breathe

Even just a small amount of nature can bring out the best in people encouraging them to slow down and take a breather. These experiences have been proven to have lasting effects on:

willingness to try new things
