Summer is in full swing and with it comes the allure of picnics. The ultimate lingering meal, picnics are perfect for playing, reading, napping, and (of course) eating delicious food. Up the relaxation factor by letting a local restaurant stock your picnic basket. To spot a great picnic provider, I look for a few of basic things:
- They offer take out and/or delivery
- They are nearby a fun picnic spot
- They serve delicious food
With that said, here are some of my top picks for food you can pick up and nearby Huntsville picnic spots to head for relaxation.
Sandwiches and Splash Pads
Head over to Main St. Cafe and Bakery on South Parkway to pick up some sandwiches, baked goods, or their daily special. (If you are lucky, it’s meatloaf day, their’s is divine.) Then venture a few miles north to Brahan Spring Park where you can check out the new Splashpad or play a round of disc golf. A pavilion, located next to the playground and Splashpad has picnic tables if you prefer your picnics to be elevated.

Calzones at College
Venice Pizza not only makes delicious calzones (and pizza, and tiramisu…) they also, being a pizza place, deliver. So find a green spot at UAHuntsville and let them bring the party to you! With a minimum order of just $9, you can even have a picnic for one.

Gelato and Ducks
In our household, ducks are cause for a prompt detour. We love to watch them swim and play and the lake at Big Spring Park offers ample opportunity for duck and fish watching (and feeding). If you find yourself in need of a mini-picnic, grab some gelato at Sam and Greg’s and walk on down to the park.

Don’t forget Burritt! A picnic on the bluff gives you the best view in town and it’s usually about 5 degrees cooler up on Monte Sano – great in the summer.
