This may be a warm winter so far but there are still plenty of the chilly, dreary days that make me long for warm comfort foods. Creamy, hearty selections that warm your cold hands with steaming dishes. My favorites are those that:
- Are warm
- Are well done standards or new takes on old standbys
- Have some substance and are filling
With those criteria in mind, these are my best winter comfort foods in Huntsville.
Chicken Berlin @ Hildegard’s German Cuisine
Hildegard’s is a local legend, known for its German cuisine, and after eating there I could see its reputation was well deserved. My dish of choice is the chicken Berlin: lightly breaded, fork tender, and exploding with flavor. Add a cup of their cheesy soup to really warm up on a cold day. And then there are the rolls… Oh the rolls.

White Chili @ Duffy’s Deli
Duffy’s is famous for their white chili and with good reason. Be prepared for a bit of a wait, but rest assured that it’s worth it.

Fried Chicken @ Betty Mae’s
Tender, lightly crispy, just the perfect amount of oil…everything that fried chicken should be. The fried corn makes for an excellent, creamy cold weather side, but the chicken alone is worth the trip.
